Emily McBride

Emily is an over-enthusiastic lover of music, books, movies, fashion, and culture in general. Her love of music spans across all genres (what is a genre anymore? she waxes poetic to herself), though she was nursed on true punk and will never understand “redneck country” music – tractors are not and cannot be sexy. Emily currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and considers herself to be a great wit, though she is still waiting on validation from a credible source.

SXSW 2014: Samsaya x Vinyl Video

Posted on April 16, 2014April 17, 2014 by Emily McBride

We found our way to the Hilton rooftop pool (life is sooo hard) in downtown Austin during South by Southwest for this picturesque interview with “magma pop” sensation, Samsaya.  This girl is seriously the bomb.

Before SXSW, I was totally obsessed with her music (everyone should get after her track “Stereotype”), and now I’m totally obsessed with her as a person.  It’s really refreshing to meet such an enthusiastic and – for lack of a better word – “chill” artist.  No ego.  Just a love for what she does and an excitement to talk about it (Samsaya, if you’re reading this…you’re so awesome let’s have tea or something soon?).

This interview was seriously just a damn delight. Check it out for yourself, and watch us talk about her album Bombay Calling, her views on stereotyping, and the lethality of pop music.

Shaky Knees Music Festival announces official set times

Posted on April 8, 2014April 8, 2014 by Emily McBride

Shaky Knees set times are available!!  Let the obsessive minute-to-minute planning begin.

Make your life easier.  Download the Shaky Knees app, and have access to your schedule on the day of the festival.

Good luck dealing with Spoon and Gaslight Anthem being at the same time, not to mention Portugal. The Man and Cold War Kids, as well as Jenny Lewis and The Replacements (that one really hurts).

Tickets are going fast, so hurry up and get on it!

SXSW 2014: Blondfire x Vinyl Video

Posted on April 4, 2014April 3, 2014 by Emily McBride

It’s no secret that we at Vinyl have love for Blondfire. It all started at South by Southwest 2013 when we saw them play a show at The Belmont with Sirah, Charli XCX, Icona Pop, Rockie Fresh, Action Bronson and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (um…best lineup ever?).  Since then, we’ve been hooked.

We sat down with them at SXSW this year (after trying to meet up at a restaurant that no longer exists and getting super lost and confused), and they patiently held off eating a delicious-looking muffin to talk with us about their newest release Young Heart, finding band members through Craig’s List, what they love about South by Southwest and, of course, what’s next for them. Enjoy!

Watch: Sharon Van Etten: “Taking Chances”

Posted on April 3, 2014February 8, 2017 by Emily McBride

Sharon Van Etten is sharing her new video for “Taking Chances,” the first single off Are We There, out May 27th on Jagjaguwar.

Inspired by Agnès Varda and her 1962 film, Cleo from 5 to 7, the video was written, shot and directed by Michael Palmieri.  But if a video inspired by a movie you’ve probably never seen isn’t enough to interest you, read on, because fate plays a part in this collab.  Apparently, Van Etten and Palmieri were both super into Varda and inspired to tribute her in this project before even speaking to each other. Mutual obsession with obscure (and very specific) French cinema? Sounds like destiny to me.

Michael says:

When I first heard the song, the lyrics immediately made me think about the opening sequence to the great Agnes Varda film, Cleo from 5 to 7, one of my favorites. I usually take time to mull over ideas before coming up with something decent to share with an artist, but this one just came out immediately.

I sketched an idea and sent it off to Sharon and Zeke Hutchins, her manager, and didn’t hear back from them for over a week. I thought I’d blown it! But soon Zeke contacted me and asked if Sharon had sent me the album artwork. I said I hadn’t even heard anything else off the album yet, let alone seen anything from it. Sharon then texted me pretty much the same question, ‘Did Zeke send you the album before you wrote this?’ I didn’t understand what the big deal was . . .

Finally they sent me a photograph that is a big component of the album artwork. It is a beautifully aged picture of Agnes Varda standing in front of a bazillion reels of 16mm film. This image of one of my filmmaking heroes has been hanging on Sharon’s wall wherever she has lived for years and years to the point where it’s all tattered and weather-worn. I like to think that Ms. Varda is standing in front of a bunch of reels from Cleo from 5 to 7, but who knows. It’s just one of the strangest coincidences, and it made us all feel like the video had to be made. So now I can safely say the video is inspired by two incredible women: Sharon, for her musical inspiration, and Agnes Varda, whose inspiration on the both of us is quite apparent.”

SXSW 2014: Charli XCX x Vinyl Video

Posted on March 31, 2014November 4, 2014 by Emily McBride

charli

Reunited, and it feels so badass!  You know it’s going to be a good SXSW when your first interview is a follow-up with pop princess Charli XCX.

You may remember her from our video interview last year. OR you may know her from her awesome collaborations with artists like Icona Pop and Iggy Azalea (no, but seriously…anyone who has been in my office or in the car with me over the last two weeks month can attest to the fact that I can’t. Stop. Listening to “Fancy”). OR you may just be obsessed with her last album, True Romance and counting the days until her next.  Either way, every one of you should know and love this girl by now.

We caught up on a balcony at the Hilton in downtown Austin for a quick reunion on the first day of South by Southwest to talk about her new projects and what’s next for her (but not before she viciously attacked me with my own microphone – don’t worry; we hugged it out). Enjoy.

Yip Deceiver x Vinyl Video

Posted on March 6, 2014March 7, 2014 by Emily McBride

Sitting in The World Famous in downtown Athens on my lunch break (that’s a lot of prepositions), talking to Yip Deceiver about their current tour and all the stuff you talk about during interviews, I hold back from mentioning all of the times I’ve seen and recognized them around town (hi, I’m a creep).

Though they’re a national touring band, they’re locals here, so I get to chat with them on and about our mutual turf in addition to their life outside of our hometown bubble.

Check out my interview with Yip Deceiver below, and be sure to catch them on their current tour, including dates at SXSW! And be sure to give them some ear-love, since they just released two new remixes!

Concord America + Vinyl Mag

Posted on January 9, 2014January 9, 2014 by Emily McBride

Concord America – not only the “best band name ever” but also the coolest dudes ever.   If you’re anywhere around Atlanta, you may know them from their killer performance at The Stuffing (they were personally asked to play the Manchester Orchestra-hosted event by Andy Hull himself…no big deal).  Or if you’re a long-time Vinyl Mag fan (Iloveyou), you may know them from when we reviewed their album, Shag Nasty, about this time last year.  The point is, you should know these guys.  And you should also check out our interview below.

Show Dates

Feb 1   –  The Green Room   –   Athens, GA

Sirah + Vinyl Mag

Posted on December 24, 2013December 27, 2013 by Emily McBride

I have a Christmas present for everyone. By now, if you’re a regular Vinyl Mag reader, you know we have a pretty big thing for Sirah.  We’ve already interviewed her TWICE in 2013 (it’s not our fault she’s so dang awesome…not to mention dang interesting), and now here’s our third.  Watch us get to know her a little better, talking about trends she hates, making peanut butter sandwiches, thrift shopping, and, of course, what’s next for her music!  Enjoy (and Happy Holidays and stuff)!
