Vinyl Video: Power 96.1 Jingle Ball 2016
What better way to send off 2016 than with a star-studded mega concert? iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball series delivered this year, with a lineup that changed in every city and featured just about every Top 40 artist currently on the charts. We got in on the action at the Atlanta show – hosted by Power 96.1 – and hung out with some of the biggest names in music.
We showed you the artists’ red carpet looks, but most of the noteworthy moments happened onstage and in between sets. We saw Fifth Harmony perform one of their last shows as a five-piece and witnessed Joe Jonas feed someone a hardboiled egg backstage. We also almost physically ran into Ariana Grande, who is stunningly beautiful and moves quietly and quickly, trailing behind her a cloud of Chanel No. 5. The strange environment was a fitting place to close out a strange year.
Check out our video recap featuring clips from the concert, as well as interviews with Jingle Ball artists Lukas Graham and Daya.
CMJ 2015: Quaildogs x Vinyl VIDEO

Atlanta six-piece Quaildogs just released their first LP, The Getting Old Factory, back in September, but they’d already made a name for themselves prior to the release. The alt-country band has opened for the likes of Moon Taxi, Roadkill Ghost Choir, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and they recently played multiple shows at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon. We caught up with them at their show at Leftfield NYC to chat about their record, studio time (shout-out to mutual friend and Glow in the Dark Studios audio engineer, Ben Etter), and how they unknowingly ended up in Counting Crows’ Adam Durtiz’ house.
SXSW 2015: Colony House x Vinyl VIDEO

Colony House is a Tennessee-based trio composed of Caleb Chapman (vocals), Will Chapman (drums), and Scott Mills (guitar). Their debut album, When I Was Younger, has received critical acclaim (and has been playing on my Spotify for well over two months).
The guys sat down with us at South by Southwest this year to chat about recording their album, their most popular live songs, and unconventional songwriting methods. Enjoy the Vinyl Video below, and also be sure to catch CH on tour (dates below)!

Marina and the Diamonds x Vinyl VIDEO
It’s been three years since Marina and the Diamonds‘ last album, Electra Heart, and a lot has changed. Her newest album, FROOT (released in full on March 13), is Marina’s first album written entirely on her own. Her ability as a songwriter really shines through, further cementing the artist’s position as a true pop queen.
Marina is not to be underestimated. Not your typical pop artist, she prefers her songs to deal with more than driving with the top down and partying ’til dawn, instead opting to tackle issues such as feminism, stereotypes, and even rape. Her lyrics are thoughtful and empowering even at their most jarring, and her ability to address these heavy issues and blend them seamlessly with upbeat synth-pop melodies further proves that Marina is one of the most important pop artists out there today. I mean, how often do you find wisdom in a pop album?
I grabbed a few minutes with Marina at South by Southwest this year to talk about her new album, the message in her song, “Savages,” and what’s next (we also spent some time geeking out over the fact that there in a In-N-Out Burger in Austin – seriously, I get excited for that every year!). Check out our Vinyl VIDEO below, and be sure to catch Marina on tour (dates below)

SXSW 2015: The Ting Tings x Vinyl VIDEO

“We’re songwriters rather than celebrities.”
The Ting Tings‘ latest album, Super Critical, was a major departure from their typical dance-pop style. With elements of funk and disco, Super Critical was independently recorded in Ibiza and co-produced with Andy Taylor (Duran Duran).
I caught up with sole members Katie White and Jules De Martino at South by Southwest this year to get the scoop on their Studio 54-inspired album, leaving their label, and dealing with album leaks. Check out our Vinyl VIDEO below!
*Atlanta readers – Be sure to catch The Ting Tings on Monday at Terminal West – see ya there!

SXSW 2015: Liza Anne x Vinyl Video
Liza Anne is a rare gem. Not only is she talented and accomplished, but she pairs that with extreme humility and a charming childlike wonder. For someone who has already made a name for herself and has an international tour under her belt, Liza still manages to maintain a complete and utter sense of gratitude and bewilderment that this is happening to her. She seems to be unable to believe that she could be so lucky, and each new opportunity excites her more than the last.
That’s not to say that this career just happened to her. Liza is a true talent with a penchant for heartbreakingly honest lyrics and endearing relability, an unbeatable combination for a folk singer (though rumor has it, her new album will challenge her genre placement).
We commandeered a corner of Farewell Books in Austin during South by Southwest this year to chat with Liza about her first time at the festival, as well as her upcoming album Two and what is next for her.
SXSW 2015: Milo Greene x Vinyl Video
“I think I’m more a creative…I’m not that good of a musician. I’m not the best songwriter in the world. I’m an okay performer. But I always have a vision.”
Milo Greene are a “cinematic pop” band from Los Angeles, California. Their name comes from a fictitious booking agent that they created to help them get shows in their early days (he’s apparently a very classy gent).
In January, the band released their newest album, Control, for which they are now rocking a non-stop tour. We caught up with them at South by Southwest this year to talk about their music, their dream film scoring gig, and their alternate personalities.

Monsoon x Vinyl Video

We are all ABOUT some Monsoon over here. One interview in five months is just not enough, so we came back for more.
I met up with Sienna Chandler (vocals, guitar), Scott Andrews (bass, vocals), and Joey Kegel (percussion) backstage before their album release show at the Georgia Theatre (the only venue they hadn’t yet played in Athens) to talk about their upcoming shows, their favorite songs to play live, and – most importantly – their awesome debut, Ride A’ Rolla (stream below)!
Hamilton Leithauser x Vinyl Video
You may know him from his gig as the lead singer of The Walkmen for over a decade, but Hamilton Leithauser still has a lot to offer musically, even with the 2013 break up (okay, fine – “hiatus”) of his previous band. Now a solo artist, Leithauser has already released an album, Black Hours, under his own name.
I sat down with Leithauser on the rooftop of the Georgia Theatre during his tour with Broken Bells to talk about Black Hours, what it’s like to release songs as a solo artist, and his future plans.
Diarrhea Planet x Vinyl Video
Errbody knows that we at Vinyl Mag have love for Diarrhea Planet. I personally have vowed never to miss a show when they come around, seeing as how we’ve already established that they are the best live band you’ll ever see.
The boys recently stopped by the Masquerade in Atlanta, GA and, since it’s been almost two years since our last backstage chat, I decided it was time to catch up.
Check out my interview with Jordan, Emmett, Mike, and Casey below to hear us talk about great pop songs and the first albums they ever bought, plus – bonus – sing a little Hanson.
Stay tuned for Diarrhea Planet’s upcoming album, Aliens in the Outfield, available November 18 on vinyl and download via Infinity Cat Recordings. Check out their single here.
