UGA MBUS Student Ritika Sharma Forges Her Own Pathway
At ten years old, Ritika Sharma learned how to play the guitar—but upside down. Her father, who was left-handed, refused to buy her the instrument because she often struggled with sustaining a hobby.
“After a week, I’d be like, ‘I’m bored.’ He didn’t believe that I would stick with it. So, I learned the guitar upside down,” Sharma said.
Now, Sharma carries a dedicated spirit, with her seventh song “Love You Have Left” being released in late March. Even though she started writing songs at ten years old, she has wanted to pursue a career in music since she was 14—not giving up on her musical journey.
Sharma describes her music as “textured.” She doesn’t like to label or confine it to a particular genre, having learned rock from her father, talking heavy metal with a former boss, and being classically trained all the while.
Instead, she often asks herself what mood she wants to create, letting the lyrics stand for themselves in the absence of production, and vice versa.
“If you took the lyrics away, the production would shine, it would tell a story. And, if we took the production away, the lyrics still tell a story—that’s a test I do with all my songs,” Sharma said.
As a student in the University of Georgia Music Business program, Sharma says she’s learned that she can forge her own pathway, with each musician’s route to success being different. She currently has a mix of singles and an EP released. Vinyl Magazine met with her to discuss some of the lore behind each.
For The Fish
I think [with] the oceanic-like ambiance, I wanted it to feel like two fish were singing to each other. I think I kind of accomplished that. It was my first fully produced song. So, it’s definitely a learning process. I don’t think it’s a perfect song, but it’s really cool to see my progress.
Arabella
I wrote this about a friend I had in high school who was going through a rough time. She would always be like, ‘Oh I’m trauma dumping.’ And, I’ll just be like ‘Girl, you’re my friend, I want to hear about everything that’s going on in your life.’ … I don’t talk to that person anymore. But it’s weird because people are in and out of your life, but songs can just stay with you. And I think about that person a lot. So, I think that song just means a lot to me because it was about a special person.
Water Fights
That one’s about a relationship that just changed and shifted, it wasn’t the same as when it first started. I think that was just about youth and friendships. I think we have a lot of these friendships early on that just changed. It’s folk-inspired, and I just really liked the guitar melody.

That song was about middle school. I think growing up, I was in a very racist county. I’d get angry, my natural expression initially was anger. … But, my dad had a very kind expression, he thinks they don’t mean it like that—we have a different outlook on what people mean and why they do things. … That song was about [how] we’ll never be on the same page about how we want to react to things, how we want to treat other people… you can love people and them not think the way you do.
The Bear
The Bear was the first song I technically posted on TikTok and got me thinking about putting songs out publicly. … I wrote that about [how] it’s like the grass is greener on the other side—you have this bear that’s outside of a cave and a man who’s in a cave, and one wants to leave and one wants to be in the cave. There [are] positives and negatives to both sides. … I think it’s some of my best lyrics.
Sweet Bitter
It was the first time I was genuinely amazed by [the] stuff I created. … Usually, I would write, and then what my rough draft was was also my final draft. But, this was the first time I was like, ‘How can we edit this? How can we make it better?’ … So it started folk, turned R&B at one point. We meshed them, so the third section has R&B melodies if you really listen to it. It’s like four completely different sections that kind of signify the healing process. I think it perfectly takes you through you going insane and feeling not healed to being healed by a person who may have affected you. And it’s that sweet bitter feeling—you love them, but it’s time to move on. And, you also hate them.
Love You Have Left
I did it for an MBUS class. I had to do it so quickly… I had like multiple people, my friends who were trusted sources, who said ‘This one had some sauce to it, put this out.’ It was more [of a] pop sound. I didn’t want to go back to folk, I was like ‘Let me keep it pop.’ The hardest part was the ending, and I think I achieved a good ending. And again, texture [and] ambiance was really big to me. I think it’s some of my best lyrics, the melody is really catchy.
Review: Nuclear Tourism: ‘Nuclear Tourism’
Athens, Georgia band Nuclear Tourism’s self-titled sophomore album serves as a reminder of how much fun music can be in its rawest form, especially if that form involves a couple surf-rock anthems.
The album opener, “Feels Alright,” perfectly sets the tone with a song that highlights the strengths of each member without taking itself too seriously. The spirit and skill of the band is on full display in substance inspired songs like cannabis carol “Mary”, a loving tribute to marijuana, and “Half Drunk”, both of which feature rapid changes in tempo that redefine the songs halfway through.
Below the beer soaked surface level, the songs offer a different kind of substance. Beginning with a sample from 1967 film The Graduate, “Dad Brains” perfectly describes the feeling of rejecting the things you don’t want to do while still figuring out what it is you do want; the song is about doing the things that bring you pleasure, even if that means doing nothing at all, and doing your damnedest not to turn into the authority figures around you. Rather than denying the confusion about the future that many experience in their youth, this song embraces and capitalizes off of it. With “No Never!”, a song about refusing to compromise your identity, Nuclear Tourism delivers with a combination of deep-fried sounding instrumentals and growly sing-shouting that results in something even more fun to listen to than its counterparts on the album, which is not an easy task. With these songs, the band is able to offer criticisms in a way that is easy for listeners to digest without coming across as pretentious.
Standout “Cut Your Hair” captures the feeling of being enamored with someone and the comforting fact that despite not knowing what you want to do, you know who you want to do it with. Between the screams scattered throughout the song and the spoken lyrics and heavy guitar at the end, “Sick of it” is the kind of song that needs to be experienced live, bonus points if it’s in the pit cradling a beer.
With Nuclear Tourism, the band experiments with different genres, concepts and sounds and the result is something filled with the good old fashion dye-your-hair, smoke-your-weed, question-your-authority-figures garage-rock sound thatNuclear Tourism does so well.

Show Review: Highlight Athens
Every spring, students in the Music Business Certificate Program at the University of Georgia complete a Microcosm of the Music Industry Project, which is a semester long project of their own design based on a sector of the music industry that they are interested in. For their project, students Daniel Crowe, Charlie Enter, Marissa Jones, Ansley Nicholson, and William Perdue created Highlight Athens, a one day music festival, as a benefit for beloved Athens institution Nuci’s Space, a nonprofit resource center focused on suicide prevention and providing support for musicians. The event featured seven up-and-coming Athens acts of various genres performing in an intimate venue filled with glowsticks and the aroma of the fairly-priced grilled cheeses they were selling.

Sun Trick Pony
The day was off to a great start with a performance by Sun Trick Pony, an Athens four-piece with a sound that is difficult to categorize to one genre (think The Backseat Lovers meets Joe Purdy, but also something completely original). The set started out calm with only lead singer and guitar player Drew Henriksen on stage performing a couple of acoustic songs, but the rest of the band soon joined him on stage to add to an already impressive performance. With a set consisting of originals like “Corduroy Jacket” and newly released single “I think I love you,” every song was so different that by the end of the performance I felt like I had seen eight different bands play (and I was a fan of each one of them).

Shine
Next up was Shine, a hip hop artist from Gwinnett County who was truly like no other artist I’ve ever seen, with songs featuring themes like religion, love, friendship, support, and transparency. I had the impression that he was truly grateful for every person in that room. He ended his set with his single “Champions”, which has gotten an impressive 277,000 streams on Spotify, and after that performance, it was easy to see why.

Ashtxn
From the moment singer/songwriter Ashtxn started his set by having the audience greet his “favorite milf” on Facetime, one thing became clear to me: I had no idea what to expect from his set but whatever it was, it was going to be extremely entertaining. He had a great stage presence and managed to successfully hype the crowd up numerous times, due both in part to his charismatic personality as well as songs like “Nighttime” that can get a crowd to open a mosh pit in the middle of the afternoon, an impressive feat.

Evelia
The next act, indie pop/rock band Evelia, was completely different from those that it followed but remained every bit as captivating. Starting off strong with their song “Around”, their talent absolutely demanded (and successfully held) the attention of everyone in the venue for a solid 45 minutes. While I enjoyed every song that they played, their new song “Bed Bugs” was especially entrancing, and I cannot wait to hear more music from them.

Five Gallon Flow
When watching this performance, it was clear that the Athens band was having a great time while they played, and they sounded fantastic doing it. The high-energy set consisted of covers ranging from Frank Ocean to Chris Stapleton, as well as originals like “Easy” that reminded me of a yacht rock song but with extra guitar, which checks out considering the captains’ hats they wore for the duration of their performance.

Schmooze
The Athens funk rock band faithfully guided by lead singer Stewie Brannam gave an electric performance during their time on stage. Their set was filled with strong vocals, great instruments, supportive booing from especially dedicated members of the crowd, and a cover of the Carrie Underwood classic “Before He Cheats” that served as both a powerful showcase of talent and an effective warning against adultery.

Red Mile Road
Closing out the evening was headliner Red Mile Road, an Athens based hard rock band with a versatile sound that seems to draw different pieces of inspiration from every decade spanning the last fifty years of music. One of their originals “Getaway” ,a rock number with a very subtle country twang, sounded like it could have easily had a sync placement in any movie released in the early 2000’s, but I am glad that I am able to experience it now. Towards the end of their set, they took a quick screaming-based survey from the audience to choose what song to cover and Green Day’s “Basket Case” seemed to win by a significant amount of decibels (maybe next time, Blink-182). Following this, they also gifted the audience with a cover of Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy”, a song that I have now heard covered at two of the last five concerts I’ve gone to and would love to see the trend continue. Overall, their performance was a solid display of talent and a fantastic way to end the evening.
Review: UGA MBUS Students: 2023 Spring Releases
As a part of the University of Georgia’s Music Business Certificate Program, I am lucky enough to be classmates with a host of musicians and performers. So here, I want to highlight a few recent releases from my talented classmates.
Bea Porges is a singer-songwriter with a penchant for layered, relatable lyrics. Backed by fellow classmate Cannon Rogers on a warm but striking steel guitar, she released her new single “all day long” on March 24. A nice subtle bassline and simple drum pattern give the song a soft, jazzy feel. The true highlight of the track is Bea’s voice. Her vocal performance brings so much character and passion into a song that is otherwise muted. At 0:46 and 2:18 and specifically, her vocal slides pleasantly catch my ears and provide a necessary structural deviation. It’s a flowery track that delves into the all-too-common feeling of longing. The mellow ache of missing someone you love and wanting to share time with them. “Space and time and feeling fine and our shared sentiments,” are the words Bea herself uses to describe this situation. In her refrain she sings, “All day long, all day long I think about loving / And all day long all day long he thinks about nothing.” Love holds so much power over us all. But unfortunately she is a cruel mistress, and so often we have love for those who may not recognize and reciprocate its presence.


Ethan Faulkner, under artist name Balistix, and fellow beatboxer DEN, released collaboration “Love Love Love” on March 31. On this EDM track, both artists display a high level of vocal control and beatbox mastery. Kicks, claps, and a range of high and low synth-like sounds are reproduced to form the beat, as the pair take turns singing. In Balistix’s own words, “everything in the song was made only with the human mouth.” It feels so effortless, but it’s clear that both of these men have acquired their skills by spending their days and nights toiling over and honing their craft. Opening with “You were so hard to find / It wasn’t easy / But now that I found you / My life’s completed” is how this “somebody to love” is presented to us listeners. At 2:19, a bouncy breakdown provides an added element of variation, and this track would feel hollow without it. This fun, danceable track would do very well at energizing the crowd at an EDM show or club. Self-proclaimed “haters” of the genre could find significant value in this as well.

Tattoo Logic, a newly-formed five-member funk-punk band, released “Ghost of a Chance” on March 31. The track opens with some cymbal taps and a simple guitar riff and then it booms! Think “Misery Business” by Paramore, “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure, or “Helena” by My Chemical Romance. “As soon as I kicked the bucket / It was easier to forget than a Classic City obituary” starts the song off on a strong note. Silence and rests are as much a part of this song as the instruments and vocals are. The instrumental oscillates between choppy, staccato notes played in unison by the guitarists and a much wackier beat that feels almost like a cartoon chase scene. The chorus goes:
It’s not a ghost of a chance, or a whisper of faith
Tattoo Logic, Ghost of a Chance
You thought you were close but you were locked in a race
It’s a haunted dance, how it drifted away
And how we say… It’s not a ghost of a chance
Unexpectedly, the first chorus is followed by the entrance of metallic synths. It fits perfectly, giving an eerie, off-putting edge to the song. The bridge, while still teeming with nervous excitement, is more orchestral in nature. An especially strong part of the song is the head voice and slides employed by the lead female vocalist. This song reminds me of a scene in a movie; The somewhat outcast but loveably goofy and confident main character asserting themself as the looming conflict is just ready to boil over.

Whether it is passive or active, casual or impassioned, live music forms a basis of culture and community across the globe. If you can, go support these local young artists who help form this basis in Athens, Georgia. Who knows, maybe you’ll even be inspired to check out a show!
Photos + Show Review: Nuçi’s Space Jam
UGA’s MBUS program kicked off their series of Nuçi’s Space Jams last Monday with Cam and his Dam Jam Band and The Dazy Chains. The turnout was amazing and helped get the ball rolling for the program as they continue to throw more shows throughout the semester.
Cam and his Dam Jam Band opened the night with a lively set that dictated the mood for the rest of the event. The band connected with the crowd by gifting them a one-of-a-kind, personal show. They opened with “How You Found Me” and included fun covers such as the crowd favorite, “Ghostbusters” theme song. Their captivating stage presence created an amazing atmosphere that was enjoyed by all.
The Dazy Chains closed out the evening with a special set featuring the entirety of their new album, Electric Sunshine. The small, personal atmosphere of Nuçi’s Space allowed the band to play new songs without pressure from a larger crowd. Given the excitement to be playing their new music for a crowd of local Athens music enthusiasts, the energy in the room was immaculate.
Overall, the night was relaxed and laid back; perfect for a small Monday night show! The MBUS program did an amazing job planning and organizing their first event as it ran smoothly and received great feedback. The next Nuçi’s Space Jam is Monday, October 18th with AD Blanco and Jacob Mallow performing. Tickets are $5 at the door and masks are required. Doors open at 7:00 and the show starts at 8:00.

Review: The Dazy Chains: “Electric Sunshine”
The Dazy Chains, a relatively new homegrown Athens band, didn’t let the past year and a half stop them from writing, recording, and releasing their debut full-length album Electric Sunshine, which came out Oct 8th at midnight. The album cover, like the contents within the album, is a psychedelic piece of art. It features the iconic steeple located on Oconee Street as an homage to Nuci’s Space, where the album was conceived, recorded, and mastered. On Electric Sunshine, the band travels through and merges multiple genres. Elements of psychedelia, rock, grunge, and funk converge with the distinctive vocalizations of Hannah Meachum to top it off. The end result is a garage rock album with different genres peeking through at select moments – a unique tribute to why making music with your friends matter.

The songs on the record are reflective and self-aware, not afraid to admit personal vulnerabilities or shortcomings. The admissions are curt and to the point. On “Counter-Clockwise,” Hannah passionately sings “you tell me I’m broken / well I don’t give a damn.” In “What You Are,” Hannah dryly admits, “you used me now / I’m not the same.” The admission is simple but there is a punch to the delivery. On “Hypnotize,” the narrator’s internal struggle is evident in the lyrics. With a clever shift in lyrics, the narrator’s perspective changes from being intoxicated with someone to feeling betrayed by them. It’s clever yet raw. These songs show that the band is in touch with their intentions and not afraid to vocalize their emotions.
On their debut album, the Dazy Chains frequently time bends, speeding up and slowing down without warning. On “Flow,” slick and rapid guitar licks and drumbeats transform briskly (yet smoothly) into a slower funkier melody. It’s pretty fun to listen to on the record and I imagine it would be just as cool, if not cooler, live.

This album is a melting pot of genres, and it reminds me of why I enjoy listening to local acts and (yet) unknown bands. Making music one cares about is the most important part. Everyone has something they enjoy and being able to bring that to life is a gift. The size of the audience is the least significant part. Congrats to the Dazy Chains for bringing to life a vision of theirs on their debut.

Show Announcement: Nuçi’s Space Jam

For several years, students in the Music Business program have put on Nuçi’s Space Jam during fall semester at the renowned Nuçi’s Space, a non-profit recording studio off of Oconee Street. Students are responsible for organizing the entire show from booking the bands to show production and everything in between. Typically, local bands are showcased as this event highlights the unique music scene in Athens.
This unique event is meant to teach MBUS students about the process of planning an entire show while also celebrating the amazing music that is created in Athens by giving local bands the opportunity to perform and expand their fanbase. Nuçi’s Space Jam is a recurring event throughout the semester, typically on a Monday in October or November.
The first show is Monday, October 11, and The Dazy Chains and Cam and his Dam Jam Band are headlining the event. The Dazy Chains are known for their diverse combination of psychedelic rock, grunge, and jazz and are very well known around Athens and Atlanta. They just released their debut album, “Electric Sunshine” on October 4th, so expect a special show featuring their new music that all of Athens is eager to hear and experience. Cam and his Dam Jam Band also falls into the psychedelic rock genre and is a very cherished jam band around Athens.
Tickets are $5 and can be paid through Venmo at the door or beforehand. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the music starts at 8:00 PM. Masks are required, and parking is located across the street next to the School of Social Work parking lot. This event is perfect for anyone looking to support both the MBUS program and local Athens bands while enjoying unique psychedelic rock with two up-and-coming bands.
Review: Hotel Fiction: ‘Soft Focus’

Hotel Fiction’s debut album Soft Focus is finally out today. Written and recorded over the past two years, Soft Focus is a complete introduction to the potential Hotel Fiction brings to the table as musicians, writers, and creatives. It’s rare that a musical act steps forward with such a complete vision and polished presence, but Hotel Fiction has done just that and more – it’s no wonder they keep climbing.
Since the release of “Astronaut Kids,” the duo has been hard at work gaining a following within and outside of Athens with five follow-up singles and multiple supporting tours. (Their first song has now garnered over a million plays on Spotify; they’ve also landed on two playlists curated by Spotify with their last single “Daydrifter.”) Now, in addition to their full-length album, they have an impressive line-up of show dates for the fall, including some dates opening for Adam Melchor.
If you’ve seen the band perform live, it quickly becomes apparent that Jade, Jessica, and their band ensemble (which continues to expand) possess unique chemistry on stage and have the skills and experience to deliver their vision to its full artistic capacity. These same qualities that make them so fun to watch live translate extremely well throughout this record. With a clear understanding of what makes a good record and what makes a great record, they create their own multiverse throughout each song with hidden musical elements, overarching themes, and small little details that tie everything together. The rhymes and the melodies throughout are so well-crafted and the production so refined, you’ll keep hitting repeat.
Soft Focus is a collection of coming-of-age songs set in the current zeitgeist. Hotel Fiction knows what it feels like to grow into adulthood in a time of ecological collapse, political unrest, social isolation, and the shattered illusions of “you can be whatever you want to be.” “Soft Focus” — the title track — is an incredible tribute to each of these and is surely the thesis of the whole album. It both understands that sometimes life is a shitshow and “the world is on fire,” but reassures you that as long as you keep things in perspective (or… soft focus, rather), you’ll be just fine. Both lyrically and sonically, the song transforms from longing for simpler times into the vibrant, messy present.
The album’s closer, “17,” is an emotional ode to missing the times you’ll never get back. It’s about leaving behind childhood. But also, about that moment when the floor gave out from under all of us and the things we loved so much (like dancing in our favorite clothes) were no longer an option. The bittersweet nostalgia of it all is ever so present here. By being themselves and telling their own stories, Hotel Fiction does what every band hopes to do which is connect with their listeners and make them feel less alone.

Review: Hotel Fiction: “Daydrifter”
Athens-based duo Hotel Fiction released their latest single ‘Daydrifter’ last Friday. Like every other song in their catalog, this one was also produced by Tommy Trautwein of We Bought a Zoo Records. Best friends Jade Long and Jessica Thompson are determined to bring a fresh sound to the table with every new track they put out; “Daydrifter” is no exception.
The beginning of “Daydrifter” starts off with bird songs, which was coincidentally–or maybe intentionally?– how their last single “Think Twice” ended. The song instantly sounds like a campfire tune from the bright strum of the guitar to the smooth rhymes of each phrase. Although sonically different than their previous singles, Daydrifter returns to the psychedelic lyrics and imagery that made listeners fall in love with Jade and Jessica in the first place. In their first single, “Astronaut Kids,” Hotel Fiction wanted urgently to escape the growing pains of being 20 by becoming “an astronaut who sails the sea.” And now, two years later, things have come (almost) full. As shapeshifters in “Daydrifter,” the two pronounce that they are ‘sun sailors,’ watching the sky burn. In a similar vein, Hotel Fiction desired to go to the moon and take off into the sky in “Astronaut Kids.” Now, they are still far off in the atmosphere but in a more self-assured tone. This time they are the moon craters, watching the earth turn.
The pair (or rather the trio because I have a hunch that Tommy frequently plays an important role here) have previously shown just how much they enjoy changing their sound midway through a song, either by adding something new or by taking something away. For example, in “Think Twice,” when the first segment of the song ends, they add in a minute and half long instrumental that crescendos and then floats back down. Or like in “Ghost Train,” during the bridge, when the strings drop away momentarily and all you hear is piano chords, an echoey harmony, and Jade’s vocals with a new vocal effect. And on and on… A similar shift is seen in this song. The second half adds in dreamy slides, a little twinkle in the background, and even a whole new narrative in the lyrics. Just like previous songs, the subtle tone change here works beautifully, enough to make a listener want to keep listening (and coming back).

Track-By-Track: Humble Plum Talks Debut ‘Seventeen Hours’

Athens, GA-based Humble Plum’s debut album, Seventeen Hours, out now. Humble Plum is composed of Daniel Hardin John Ilardi and Josh Johnston. Ilardi and Johnston are students in UGA’s music business program, affectionately monikered as MBUS, and Hardin graduated the program in 2020. Childhood friends Hardin and Ilardi reconnected at UGA and brought Johnston into their fold.
The album title, Seventeen hours, refers to the 17 hours in which the group wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered the album. When Hardin first suggested the idea Johnston kindly told him to get some sleep. The next morning, still adamant, Hardin quickly got Johnston and Ilardi on board. “We just wanted to see if we could do it,” said Johnston.
The rules were simple: The album had to be completed in one day and absolutely no thought or planning could take place prior to the day the group had set aside to make this album. The group “didn’t think anyone would listen” to Seventeen Hours, they just made it for the fun of creating music together. The result is joyful chaos. The album feels raw and personal in a completely new way.
We asked Humble Plum to take us through each track on the album and give us further insight into the making of Seventeen Hours.

Johnny
Starting with a guitar riff, Hardin penned some lyrics about his friend and bandmate John who “has a really nice car and is always down to jam.” The first song on the album, “Johnny” was written and recorded between 7 a.m and 9 a.m and then forgotten until putting the final album together.
Hey Jere!
Johnston really wanted to make a Jere Morehead diss track and a punk track. Both wishes were met with “Hey Jere!” The track gave current students Ilardi and Johnston an opportunity to air their grievances with the president of UGA on the university’s handling of COVID-19. Lyrics include gems like “I can’t go to the beach, but I can go to a game? Why don’t you learn to spell your own name?”
Is That A Bee?
In a jarring transition from “Hey Jere!”, “Is That A Bee” is a mellow reggae track that questions Jerry Seinfield on why he ended Seinfield and made the Bee Movie. The track’s composition started with an off-beat guitar and reggae drums inspired by Sting’s “Englishman In New York.” Hardin wrote the lyrics in 10 minutes “on pure instinct.”
Rest in P-Bass
A somber addition to the album, “Rest in P-Bass” was a collaborative effort about a bass guitar Johnston sold and missed dearly. The song utilizes a mandocello, which is a baritone mandolin that adds to the tracks depth. The humor in writing a song about a bass with the same level of sincerity as a break-up ballad is not lost on the trio. “There is definitely an element of funny in the sad,” said Johnston. “It’s overly dramatic for sure.”
Intermissionary Funk
“Intermissionary Funk” forgoes lyrics to let the track’s instrumentals shine. The first of two instrumental tracks on the album, “Intermissionary Funk” harkens back to the funk-rock backings popular in the early ’70s. While Hardin’s drums and Johnston’s bass ground the track, the guitar is what makes the track noteworthy. In a unique approach, Hardin, Johnston, and Ilardi took turns playing guitar adding the slightest variety to the tracks uniting riff.
Mother Russia
Johnston lived in Bulgaria for five years, which has become quite the joke among the friends and was the impetus for Johnston to write “Mother Russia.” The instrumentals for the song are “basically the Tetris song” according to Johnston. Interestingly, the theme to Nintendo’s 1989 video game actually started its life as a 19th century Russian folk song “Korobeiniki.” The song was recorded using a 1969 Soviet Union microphone. “It sounds like you’re yelling in a bread line,” says Hardin. Ilardi describes the mics effect as “aggressive” which is why they also used it on the track “Hey Jere!” The song was recorded in one take with Ilardi holding the mic up to Johnston, turning red with suppressed laughter. Hardin calls the track “a glorious tune.”
2nd Best Friend
“We all have that friend we like, but also find them annoying,” said Ilardi when asked about the concept of “2nd Best Friend.” It’s about your back-up friend. The song was inspired by Flight of The Conchords “Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” taking the song’s concept of calling someone “the most beautiful girl,” but qualifying it with “in the room. Humble Plum does something similar by qualifying “best friend” with “2nd” making the track kind of mean, but very relatable.
Thank You Caledonia
“It’s the sad one on the album,” said Hardin in reference to “Thank You Caledonia” Humble Plum’s ode to the iconic Athens music venue. Ironically enough, when the group decided to write about Caledonia, they thought they were going to make another funny song. It is when the group started actually writing the song and reflecting on what the loss of Caledonia meant to them that the song turned into the heart wrenching goodbye heard on the album.
Siri
The guitar for “Siri” was written at 7 a.m and put aside for about 12 hours when the band started building the rest of the song. Hardin developed the drums taking inspiration from Cloudland drummer Karmen Smith. “We wanted a song people could jump to,” said Ilardi, and “Siri” is just that. The track’s title comes from the lyrics which the group wrote using predictive type making the song completely incomprehensible.
The Mighty Oconee
The second instrumental track and final album track is “The Mighty Oconee” a joke because as Johnston explains “the Oconee is anything but mighty.” The track has an Americana vibe produced by the layering of various string instruments including banjo, mandolin, and mandocello.
