Emily McBride

Emily is an over-enthusiastic lover of music, books, movies, fashion, and culture in general. Her love of music spans across all genres (what is a genre anymore? she waxes poetic to herself), though she was nursed on true punk and will never understand “redneck country” music – tractors are not and cannot be sexy. Emily currently lives in Brooklyn, NY and considers herself to be a great wit, though she is still waiting on validation from a credible source.

SXSW 2015: The Ting Tings x Vinyl VIDEO

“We’re songwriters rather than celebrities.”

The Ting Tings‘ latest album, Super Critical, was a major departure from their typical dance-pop style.  With elements of funk and disco, Super Critical was independently recorded in Ibiza and co-produced with Andy Taylor (Duran Duran).

I caught up with sole members Katie White and Jules De Martino at South by Southwest this year to get the scoop on their Studio 54-inspired album, leaving their label, and dealing with album leaks.  Check out our Vinyl VIDEO below!

SXSW 2015: Liza Anne x Vinyl Video

Posted on April 7, 2015April 9, 2015 by Emily McBride

Liza Anne is a rare gem.  Not only is she talented and accomplished, but she pairs that with extreme humility and a charming childlike wonder.  For someone who has already made a name for herself and has an international tour under her belt, Liza still manages to maintain a complete and utter sense of gratitude and bewilderment that this is happening to her.  She seems to be unable to believe that she could be so lucky, and each new opportunity excites her more than the last.

That’s not to say that this career just happened to her.  Liza is a true talent with a penchant for heartbreakingly honest lyrics and endearing relability, an unbeatable combination for a folk singer (though rumor has it, her new album will challenge her genre placement).

We commandeered a corner of Farewell Books in Austin during South by Southwest this year to chat with Liza about her first time at the festival, as well as her upcoming album Two and what is next for her.

SXSW 2015: Milo Greene x Vinyl Video

Posted on April 6, 2015April 9, 2015 by Emily McBride

“I think I’m more a creative…I’m not that good of a musician. I’m not the best songwriter in the world. I’m an okay performer. But I always have a vision.”

Milo Greene are a “cinematic pop” band from Los Angeles, California.  Their name comes from a fictitious booking agent that they created to help them get shows in their early days (he’s apparently a very classy gent).

In January, the band released their newest album, Control, for which they are now rocking a non-stop tour.  We caught up with them at South by Southwest this year to talk about their music, their dream film scoring gig, and their alternate personalities.

Slingshot 2015: Nightmare Air x Vinyl Mag

Posted on March 26, 2015April 1, 2015 by Emily McBride

NightmareAir_Promo

Nightmare Air are on a roll.  Described as “possibly L.A.’s loudest band” (Surfing on Steam), they’ve been on a recent tirade, tearing up LA with multiple shows, dropping in on South by Southwest last week in Austin, and now heading to Athens, GA for night two of Slingshot Festival.

Even better? The band will be playing a Slingshot showcase hosted by none other than your favorite online music mag (us. Vinyl Mag. I know that’s what you were thinking).  Come out to the Caledonia Lounge tomorrow night for some ear-smashing loud music.  We’ll see you there.

We grabbed some time with NA’s guitarist/vocalist Dave Dupuis to talk about Slingshot, being on a Japanese label, and skateboard tricks.  Enjoy.

Vinyl Mag: What sounds or inspiration did you take from your previous band (Film School) to Nightmare Air?

Dave Dupuis: The wall of sound that we had as a five-piece in Film School is something that I love and is important to me, which we do well in Nightmare Air as the power trio….but with Nightmare Air, we’re making music a little more direct, a bit more rocky and upbeat, which is a natural move for the the three of us in this band.

VM: How does living in LA influence your sound or performance?

DD: Hate to be that guy, but the weather is just nice in LA! For me, when the weather is nice, it gives you a lot of mental freedom, which helps when it comes to making a record. This coming from a New Hampshire native and one who has lived for many years in Seattle…the consistent LA weather is appreciated.

There are lot of great bands in LA, too, which keeps you as an artist pushing your creative limits to be the best you can, live and in the studio.

VM: Where do the rock n roll sounds in your album come from/who are they influenced by?

DD: A lot of time in the studio monkeying around with FX pedals, keyboards…..looping bits and screaming/ mumbling into the mic for hours till you get that sweet combination to create the vibe!

VM: You are on a Japanese label, Vinyl Junkie. How did that come about? Do you have a large following there?

DD: The Vinyl Junkie signing came about through the US label that put High in the Lasers out digitally and on CD, Saint Marie Records. The Japanese version has different art work and some extra tracks, which is quite cool, too. Are we big in Japan? Isn’t everyone!? We have yet to go over there, hopefully soon.

VM: Favorite band you’ve shared the stage with?

DD: Tough question. Last year, we did a co-headline tour with a good pals from London called Roman Remains. They are two members of UK band The Duke Spirit, whom I toured with for a couple years. Great bands, great friends, good times.

VM: “Nightmare Air” is the name of a skateboard trick…do you still try to find time to skate between all the tours and traveling?

DD: I do! Depending on the tour, I love taking a board on tour, too.

VM: While you’re touring, do you find time to write, or do you do all of your writing at home?

DD: It’s next to impossible to write on the road; it’s a different brain for me. We sometimes come up with a few musical ideas at sound checks….pretty rare though. I always have my little lyric book and always write down phrases or words that are inspiring, which most of the time ends up being just a collection of weird tripped out shit. A lot of those things make it into the songs though! The name of our debut LP High in the Lasers definitely came off that list.

VM: Best festival ever attended?

DD: Plissken Festival in Athens, Greece last summer was an amazing experience for us. We ended up staying in Athens for a week. Played the opening night party and ended up doing a really fun live recording session at a great studio out there called Lizard Sound. Great people and made some good friends for life.

VM: What are you most excited to do while you’re in Athens [Georgia] besides play Slingshot?

DD: Hang out!

VM: What can audiences expect from you Slingshot show?

DD: A wild ride.

VM: What’s next for Nightmare Air?

DD: We’re in the process of making a new record, we recorded a bunch of ideas before we left for this tour, and hoping to record another batch when we get back…album and a big tour this fall!

Monsoon x Vinyl Video

Yes, that is a veil. Watch the interview – you’ll get it.

We are all ABOUT some Monsoon over here.  One interview in five months is just not enough, so we came back for more.

I met up with Sienna Chandler (vocals, guitar), Scott Andrews (bass, vocals), and Joey Kegel (percussion) backstage before their album release show at the Georgia Theatre (the only venue they hadn’t yet played in Athens) to talk about their upcoming shows, their favorite songs to play live, and – most importantly – their awesome debut, Ride A’ Rolla (stream below)!

Tom DeLonge Responds to Bandmates’ Statement

Posted on January 28, 2015February 8, 2017 by Emily McBride

image001

The Blink-182 feud continues, as Tom DeLonge (guitarist/vocalist) defends himself from his former bandmates’ (Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker) accusations that he was “disrespectful and ungrateful,” as well as their statement that he quit the band through his manager without doing them the courtesy of informing them directly.

In his (ridiculously long) Facebook diatribe, DeLonge condescendingly claims moral and professional superiority over Hoppus and Barker (best line in the letter – “But I guess that’s another example of how I differ from most. I follow the light… I follow passion and I make art. I hang with my son, my daughter and my wife.”), playing the victim and humblebragging that his only failure was putting his faith in them instead of trusting his own instincts and judgement.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Tom DeLonge post about Blink-182 if it didn’t have some shameless Angels & Airwaves plugging as well.

Check out the full letter below:

LETTER TO THE FANS

Where to begin?

The truth is always a good place. Let’s go there.

I love Blink and am incredibly grateful for having it in my life. It has given me everything. EVERYTHING. I started this band, it was in my garage where I dreamed up the mischief.

So what have I been doing behind the scenes? Well, I’ve tried to make things work. I’ve tried to help move this band down 50 different paths using my people, or other people, and people we don’t even know. I tried to put forth ideas about how we can grow and challenge ourselves to become a better band. I’m not sitting around waiting for someone else to do the work. I’m not wired that way.

The big reset was when I tried to put together a band summit in Utah where we’d talk and work things out. It quickly was narrowed down to three hours in someone’s dressing room in a shitty casino. What I hoped would be a positive get-together away from everything turned into an awkward meeting in a smelly convention hall dressing room. But it was there that I told Mark and Travis that as long as we talked, and things were good between us as real friends, that I would be engaged and work passionately. I’d mirror our personal relationship. Exact words.

Then, the EP was the test. Months later, we’re recording those songs. I was in the studio for two months and they came in for around 11 days. I didn’t mind leading the charge, but we had all agreed to give it 100%. And this time- no baggage.

Despite that, we still somehow managed to self-sabotage.

At one point, squabbling and politics forced me to pull the EP down at a time when 60,000 fans were trying to purchase it. And that blew my mind. I’d been trying so hard but that moment ultimately broke my spirit. I then realized that this band couldn’t lose the years of ill will.

It was after that episode that I promised myself I would never be in that position again – to rely on the words we said to each other.

I remember asking one of them on the phone, “did you try your best? Like we all agreed to?” He was silent.

Are they at fault?

Am I? Of course. I’m nuts.

But there’s three of us – we’re all accountable. At the end of the day, we’ve always been dysfunctional, which is why we haven’t talked in months. But we never did. In the 8 years we have been together it has always been that way.

Over the past two and a half years, while a recording partner was being sought for a new Blink record, I launched a media company. I just put out a new Angels & Airwaves record and as some of you know, there’s a lot more coming – comics, books, a film, etc. The books will all come with music. This is a wheel that’s already in motion. So you can imagine my frustration when I was handed a 60-page Blink contract saying I couldn’t release an Angels album for 9 months and that the Blink album had to be recorded in 6 months, which was impossible for me. Doing so would force me to breach several artist contracts. Authors, Concept Artists, Animators… Many people.

They did eventually drop the Angels provision, but the part about having to finish a Blink album in 6 months remained. All of these other projects are being worked, exist in contract form– I can’t just slam the brakes and drop years of development, partnerships and commitments at the snap of a finger.

I told my manager that I will do Blink 182 as long as it was fun and worked with the other commitments in my life, including my family.

But Mark and Travis know all of this.

I wrote this same letter to them a year ago. But it created a massive argument, the biggest one yet actually. I just wanted us to do things we all agreed on. But that was their moment to dig in. From their view I was controlling everything. In reality, I was scared to put myself out there again. To repeat the EP experience.

I also wrote all of this to their managers this past December (who told me my bandmates weren’t angry and agreed with some of my ideas of how to grow the band).

So you can imagine my surprise when a press release went out yesterday—without my knowledge—about the band’s future. This is new to me. It’s not in my nature to fuel negativity about the legacy of the band on something as trashy as the Internet world.

But I guess that’s another example of how I differ from most. I follow the light… I follow passion and I make art. I hang with my son, my daughter and my wife.

At the end of the day, all of this makes me really sad.

Sad for us.

Sad for you- that you’re witnessing this immaturity.

I know them very well, and their current actions are defensive and divisive.

I suppose they’re doing this as a way to protect themselves from being hurt.

Like we all do.

And even as I watch them act so different to what I know of them to be, I still care deeply for them. Like brothers, and like old friends. But our relationship got poisoned yesterday.

Never planned on quitting, just find it hard as hell to commit.

Tom
