of Montreal announce North American tour and share new song
of Montreal have released the second single off of their upcoming album, Aureate Gloom, due out March 3 this year (pre-order here).
The track, “Empyrean Abattoir,” has the quintessential of Montreal sound, with non-stop energy paired with the jaded rant-narration that frontman Kevin Barnes has perfected to an art.
Check out the track below, and be sure to mark your calendars for their upcoming tour. You know I’ll be there.

Lydia x Vinyl Mag
The much-anticipated Illuminate Tour has had dedicated Lydia fans excited for months. We caught up with lead singer Leighton Antelman at his sold out show in Atlanta to figure out exactly just what it is about this album that is so important to fans. In the process, we also found out the indie singer’s feelings about Internet piracy, his preference of libation and the scoop on Lydia’s future projects.
Vinyl Mag: You guys have been on tour for exactly a month now – how has it been? Any major highlights [from the tour] we should know about?
Leighton Antelman: Just that the fans have been crazy. This is probably one of the best tours we have headlined so far, and we’ve just been blown away by how cool the fans are.
VM: Not that anyone’s complaining, but why now? I mean, most bands wait until the 10th Anniversary of a beloved album to dedicate a tour.
LA: Well, it was just the five-year anniversary of Illuminate this past fall, and we just couldn’t fit it into our tour schedule for the fall. We didn’t want to just throw a tour together, so we decided to wait until spring to do it properly.
VM: What do you think it is about Illuminate that resonates so deeply with your fans?
LA: I mean, I don’t know. For me it’s just another record we did, but to the fans… they really like this album. Your guess is as a good as mine.
VM: Thinking back to the writing/recording of the album, is there anything in particular that sticks out in your minds as special? Did you sense at the time that this would be such an important album for you and your fans?
LA: It was our second album that we ever did, and it was kind of the first album that we took seriously. We weren’t at home just screwing around, but I definitely didn’t know it was going to be such an impact on the fans.
VM: You’re newest album Devil came out last year. How was writing and recording that album different from Illuminate and other albums from before your hiatus?
LA: This one was different, because I had a different team of people around me. Lydia has always kind of been a collective project. I just like to write and play with different people, because it keeps it interesting.
VM: How is it different to play a set that consists of an album in its entirety compared to a typical show? Are there any songs in particular you find it difficult to revisit after years of not playing?
LA: No, it’s actually really fun, because some of the songs we haven’t played in years. It’s something new, and we’ve been having fun with it. We’ve obviously never [played] a record all the way through, so the whole tour has been really new and cool for us in that regard.
VM: Back in November, you told us that some of the songs Mindy White [did vocals] on were difficult to play live. How did you meet that challenge when playing on this tour?
LA: Well, there are two other people that sing on stage with me now, and they’ll do some of the falsettos and harmonies and what not. Some of the parts that she sang, I’ve just adapted and made my own version of it.
VM: You guys have been touring for so many years now; do you have any interesting stories that would solidify Atlanta’s reputation for being totally weird?
LA: [Laughing] I don’t think you guys are totally weird.
VM: I mean, we are pretty proud of our weirdness.
LA: I have my other project, Cinema, and this is where we write and record, so I spend a whole lot of time in Atlanta. I probably spend the most of my time between Atlanta and home, so I’ve always thought it was pretty cool place.
VM: A little birdie – Vinyl writer and huge Lydia fan, Samantha [Gilder] – told me you were a big whiskey fan. Any recent favorites you want to share?
LA: [Laughing] Not really to be honest, I’m just a big fan of Jameson. It’s my go-to.
VM: This question is a bit political, but recently there’s been a lot of discussion about free online listening services like Spotify and Pandora and how they affect bands livelihood. What are your thoughts on them? Do you see them as a tool or a burden?
LA: I absolutely view it as a tool. I don’t understand when bands get fired [up] about music getting out for free. If somebody wants your record, they’re going to get it whether it’s free or not. I just think, even if it’s free, that just means more people coming out to shows, and who could be mad about that? I think you just have to embrace it at this point.
VM: Obviously fans are glad to have you back from hiatus and have had a positive response to your latest album, Devil, but what can we expect from Lydia in the future once the this tour wraps up?
LA: After this tour, we are going to take a month or two off. We already have a handful of songs; we just want to get some more. We all write the songs and then just send them back and fourth to each other, and we’re getting very close to having enough for a new record, so we’re going to focus on that when we get home. It’s about time for that.

Luther’s Phil Warner talks about touring, The Fest, and their debut album Let’s Get You Somewhere Else
If you haven’t heard of Luther, be glad you have me around to keep your playlists up to date. Luther is made up of Phil Warner (vocals/guitar), Nick Harris (vocals/guitar), Greg Karlowitsch (bass), and Andy Clarke (drums).
The band formed in 2011, and already they’ve made some serious strides, touring with bands like Bouncing Souls and The Menzingers. They have just released their debut full-length called Let’s Get You Somewhere Else and, for your own good, you should absolutely check it out. While you’re at it, enjoy this interview with Phil Warner.
___________
___________
Vinyl Mag: As a relatively new band, you’ve already accomplished quite a lot. Give me a brief history of the band so far.
Phil Warner: We formed the band in the fall of 2010. I became friends with Nick [Harris] before that time, and we were hanging out jamming one day and decided to write some songs together. We had a drummer friend that we played with for a long time, and we had a different bass player when we started who ended up leaving shorty after. Greg [Karlowitsch] was in a band called The Great Explainer, and he was friends with whole Asbury Park crew. Once we played around Jersey, Philly, New York…people knew we were a band. Greg was super stoked on us and brought that whole crew to us. We toured with The Menzingers. That was the pivotal point where we knew.
VM: You just played The Fest. How was that?
PW: The Fest, in my personal account, was great. I feel like, in terms of our set, it was incredible – a ton of fun and a great turnout. I think that all of the bands from Philly once again crushed The Fest.
We are currently in the van right now headed to Denver…we really lucked out, because we are going away from this awful hurricane that is destroying the east coast.
VM: You have kept super busy since your start – what do you do when you aren’t working on the band?
PW: As of lately, we don’t have time to do anything else. After the Smoking Popes tour, we will hit it again in the spring.
We left in the summer for 60 days with Bouncing Souls and The Menzingers, which was incredible. Then we were home for two weeks, and then we did two weeks with our great dear friends called Timeshares, and then we did Canada for two weeks with Bouncing Souls’ Dave Hause, and then The Fest and the Smoking Popes tour.
It’s really crazy. Even when we were home for two weeks between the summer tour…I was on serious stimulus withdrawal. I mean, I am looking forward to going home, hanging out, seeing my family, etc. And meanwhile saving money to get back on the road.
VM: You just came out with Let’s Get You Somewhere Else. How has the response to that been?
PW: The response has been great! We’ve been getting a lot of awesome, awesome reviews. When we were in Canada, Pete from Bouncing Souls would come to us and show us another awesome review again and again. All of our friends are excited about it, and it’s hard to impress close friends…it’s nice to have that support and [support from] other bands that you’re touring with. Everyone is just really stoked…[it] feels really good, and we as band are proud of it. It feels like we nailed writing an album, like we have good songs and a cohesive album.
VM: What was the inspiration/writing process for the album?
PW: We were writing for this record since winter. We had a pretty intense tour last fall – we went out and did kind of a US tour with Tom May from The Menzingers. He played an acoustic act with us. We got into a really bad van accident, and it was a catalyst for getting our asses in gear, as well as a source of material for songs. It helped us with what to write about.
Nick and I will usually be the first ones to meet up…either one of us will have something bring to each other, flesh out, take to Andy and Greg, and sit down as full band. Everyone has great amount of input, whether it is structural or in building melodies. It feels really good to write a song in your head and bring to a band and see it become something greater than yourself.
VM: What is next for you after this tour?
PW: I have been writing some stuff, and Nick has, too. I am most excited to be home and write, maybe do a few 7”s, and maybe do some splits with some cool bands. We want to do stuff like that before we write another full length. I’m most looking forward to being home and being able to write again to see what kind of doors are opened.
Personally, I would love to do splits with The Sidekicks…one of my favorite bands…or Cheap Girls would be awesome.
On the bus with VNV Nation
Got the chance to hang out on the tour bus with Ronan Harris, legendary music producer and vocalist for the band VNV Nation.
Could not have been a nicer or more interesting guy. The show was incredible, and I found myself spaz-dancing despite my best efforts to keep dignified composure (seriously…I was an idiot out there).
VNV Nation are an Irish/English futurepop band. I caught them on the last stop of the first leg of their national headline tour after the release of their new album, Automatic.
Automatic was released in the U.S. on October 25, 2011. It is their eighth studio album. Harris describes process of recording this album, as well as its themes and the future of the band, in the interview below.
Enjoy:
