Shaky Knees 2014: The Whigs x Vinyl Mag
If you follow us on social media, you already know we pretty much had a blast of a time at Shaky Knees this past weekend. But aside from seeing an impressive amount of impressively talented artists, we also got to talk to a few of them (impressed?).
Fellow Athens natives, The Whigs, played the festival Friday afternoon at the Ponce de Leon stage at Atlantic Station and then turned around the next day and played beloved East Atlanta venue/bar The EARL. In April, the band released their fifth studio album, Modern Creation, and is currently touring the album. See them. After you read this interview, duh.
VM: You recently played the Late Show with David Letterman and also had a video on Conan – awesome. How do you get those gigs/how was it?!
Parker: We’ve been fortunate to have some sweet opportunities with the release of our new album, Modern Creation. Conan debuted the “Hit Me” music video, and the Late Show had us on to perform the song live. Both were thrilling and an honor.
VM: Did you get anything good on Record Store Day this year?
Parker: Yeah!!! Purchased Duke Ellington, James Brown, Andre Previn piano records and a sealed Phil Spector Collection vinyl at Wuxtry Records in Athens.
VM: Who were you most excited to see at Shaky Knees in Atlanta this year? Did you stay the whole weekend?
Parker: I got to see a little bit of Charles Bradley and Band Of Skulls on Friday. I stayed in Atlanta the whole weekend and was super excited to see The Replacements and Modest Mouse but didn’t get to see either unfortunately.
VM: Why didn’t you get to see [them]?
Parker: I missed their sets, because I was loading in equipment and sound checking for our late night show at the Earl in East Atlanta.
VM: What do you like about playing at festivals, as opposed to playing regular shows? Which do you prefer?
Parker: It’s fun to see buddies from other bands at festivals. It’s also a nice setting to get turned on to a new group. I wouldn’t say I prefer either to the other.
VM: You are playing Shaky Knees Friday and then The EARL, also in ATL, on Saturday. Two very different Atlanta experiences two nights in a row. Was there a reason you wanted to play the festival there and then a smaller venue?
Parker: The opportunity arose for us to rock both occasions, and we were psyched. Definitely an opportunity to tailor a performance to two radically different environments.
VM: What was different about the performances?
Parker: The EARL show was definitely more intimate, and we began and ended the set with different songs than at the festival performance. Showcased a few more songs from Modern Creation and got back to our roots with some older Whigs songs. We also did an encore at the EARL which featured a slight costume change to coincide with a David Bowie cover.
VM: As a fellow Athenian, how would you say that Athens has influenced your sound?
Parker: The Glands, R.E.M, Elephant Six Collective, and later the Drive By Truckers were some of our biggest models on and off stage. The Athens scene inspired us to want to create instantly entertaining music with conceptual depth.
VM: Compare the Athens music scene to the Atlanta music scene. How is the Athens music scene unique from any other?
Parker: I’d say they’re both eclectic with Atlanta’s being understandably larger. I’m personally more in tune with the eclecticism of Athens’ bands over Atlanta’s, with a few exceptions. I haven’t spent a substantial amount of local time in all the other scenes, so I can’t speculate on what differentiates Athens from everywhere else.
VM: How has response been to Modern Creation?
Parker: I’d say it’s been generally positive.
VM: I LOVE the album cover – can you tell me about it? Who came up with it?
Parker: We were doing an photo shoot, and I asked someone on the set to snap a photo of us with my iPhone. The image was cool, and when we were brainstorming album cover ideas, I sent the photo to the band. Tim relayed his idea of framing the photo with a skull to Julian, who made the vision a reality.
VM: Who does most of the writing/what is the process like?
Parker: I’ll write song ideas and bring them into band practice where we’ll jam and see which ones gel. As we hone arrangements and structures, we’ll see which songs survive over the course of an album cycle. The most durable jams get the anointed finished lyrics, which I write with guidance from Tim and Julian if I get stuck or have questions on direction, clarity, etc.
VM: In three words, describe your sound to someone who has never heard you.
Parker: Raw, real, rock.
VM: What is next for The Whigs?

Shaky Knees Founder Tim Sweetwood x Vinyl Mag
For the second year in a row thousands of rock & roll fans will flock to the heart of Atlanta for the Shaky Knees Festival. The weekend-long musical extravaganza kicks off Friday, May 9th and features plenty of must-see musicians. The anatomically unstable festival is not without its changes though. 2014 brings with it a new location and a new lineup. Coming off an extraordinary first year that featured performances from Band of Horses, Delta Spirit, and Drive-By Truckers, it was hard to imagine how the festival could improve upon itself. For Shaky Knees Festival founder Tim Sweetwood, the answers were easy: more bands, a bigger venue, and reasonably priced tickets. Recently, we got the chance to speak with the festival’s founder about this year’s lineup, the festival’s change of scenery, and whether or not he sold his soul to the Rock & Roll Devil.
Vinyl Mag: What initially inspired you to found Shaky Knees?
Tim Sweetwood: I’ve always wanted to produce a festival – they are my favorite kind of events to attend, and I just waited til the time was right.
VM: What do you feel that Shaky Knees offers that some of the other Atlanta music festivals might not?
TS: Real indie music and a chance to discover something new. The lineup is built on having bands you know and haven’t seen in a while but have always loved, and then newcomers in the same genre that will be the next “it” band, and you can see them before anyone else does.
VM: This year the festival is changing locations. How do you feel about the move from the Masquerade Music Park to Atlantic Station?
TS: We feel great. The festival is growing in size naturally, and the Music Park/Old 4th Ward park couldn’t hold what we wanted to do, and we are not big enough for Piedmont Park or something like that. Atlantic Station is very accessible, and still inside the city limits.
VM: What do you feel the biggest improvement will be from last year to this year’s festival?
TS: The chance to see more bands or a ticket price that is close to the lowest price of all the similar national festivals.
VM: How has Shaky Knees managed to deliver such impressive performers in its first two years? Did you sell your soul to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Devil?
TS: Yes, we are on the Highway to Hell. I’ll introduce you to him soon.
VM: Shaky Knees is only in its second year, but already it feels like a mainstay amongst the festivals. Do you feel like your initial expectations have already been met and exceeded?
TS: We have met many of our goals, but there are still many to achieve, and we hope by setting the bar so high with the lineup that from year to year it will keep people coming back and wanting more.
VM: I know that you’ve said you aren’t trying to create the next Bonnaroo, but do you see growth in the festival’s future in terms of number of acts, stages, and attendees?
TS: Yes, we know there will be growth, and although there is tremendous excitement and positive pressure, we don’t want to get too big too quick.
VM: Do you have any specific performers that you are most excited about this year?
TS: Honestly, excited to see them all – that is the joy of booking your own festival. I put on the acts that I truly love and I’m a fan of. We don’t just put anyone on there.
VM: What’s your most memorable festival moment, whether at Shaky Knees or another festival?
TS: Keeping that one to myself, but we truly hope people will have some of their favorite festival experiences at this year’s fest and for years to come.
VM: What advice do you have for Shaky Knees festival-goers?
TS: Get there early and stay late!!
VM: Since Shaky Knees is a Rock ‘n’ Roll fan’s dream come true, can you give us your top three rock bands of all time?
TS: It is really really hard to narrow it down to three, but I’ll throw three out there in no particular order….My Morning Jacket, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Buddy Holly.
RAW Natural Born Artist: PIXELS at Terminal West: Music

I’m not sure if everyone at Terminal West Wednesday night was prepared for the amalgamation of creativity that was to take place inside the brick walls of the former steel foundry, but I know I certainly wasn’t. Courtesy of RAW Natural Born Artists, an international organization that connects artists of all kinds, the Pixels showcase featured three talented, up and coming musical acts as well as fashion, art, photography, and performance art from the Atlanta area.
Four Flats, a trio comprised of David Blackmon and Brad Garner on guitar and Courtney Rogers on lead vocals was first to take the stage. Their set consisted mostly of covers with a southern influence such as Otis Redding’s Sitting on the Dock of a Bay, Dolly Parton’s Jolene, and Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers, a band in which Rogers said has had a huge influence on their direction as a band. Despite the fact that Four Flats has no original compositions yet, they show real promise as a band.

The second act of the night, and undoubtedly the crowd favorite, was Bonnie Bordeaux. Bordeaux and her powerhouse of a band, who have only been collaborating for a few months, used their contagious stage presence to transport the audience to the 1940’s. They performed mostly original songs, which were innovative and unique. Never a boring moment, the set combined Pop, Jazz, and R&B. Bordeaux also performed an ambitious cover of Settle Down by Kimbra, which she pulled off stunningly. Between Bordeaux’s musical range and ability to put on a great show, this group has grand potential to be the next big thing to come out of Atlanta. Bonnie Bordeaux will also appear at SCAD Atlanta on February 28th.

The last musical act of the night was Athens-based rock band American Mannequins, who have become a steady presence in the greater Atlanta music scene this past year. Lead vocalist Curtis Vorda, effortlessly hit high notes belting out melodies that ranged from uplifting to haunting. Although their involved prog-rock arrangements and somewhat awkward stage presence didn’t strike a chord with all audience members, their solid musicianship was more than redeeming.

The Pixels showcase put on by RAW Natural Born Artists featured musicians with raw natural born talent and an eclectic variety of music that the audience appreciated. Check out these great new artists and upcoming RAW events here.
RAW Natural Born Artists: PIXELS at Terminal West: Art

Where can you find feminist, hiphop performance art, utensil jewelry, and photos of naked women standing near Atlanta landmarks? You’re best bet is a Raw Natural Born Artist showcase like the one held last Wednesday at Terminal West. Pixels featured music, art, photography, fashion, performance and make-up artists.
The visual pieces were hung on display on chain-linked fences that surrounded the main stage where three talented music acts would perform. Jewelry booths were set up in the adjoining room while performance art and a fashion show completed the evening.
Photographer Q. Oliver’s portion of fence was swarming with interested people all night. His stunning black and white photographs featured women of all shapes and ethnicities standing completely or partially nude in the middle of some of Atlanta’s busiest streets. I was told he captures the photos in the early morning hours to avoid too much attention from passer-byes and law enforcement. Check out Q.Oliver’s photos here.

Jewelry designer Mallory Wingo of WingostarrJewelery incorporates natural gemstones with everyday items like forks and spoons to create some very unique pieces. She strives to make customized pieces with the time consuming process of hammering letter stamps into the metal of her designs. Shop WingostarrJewelery here.
Danielle Deadwyler a.k.a Didi Xio’s performance art incorporated hiphop beats and social commentary on gender and race stereotypes. She first engaged the audience by having a man hold one end of a noose, wrapping herself up in the other end and pulling on it violently while she recited poetic verses. She then took the stage in a fierce mental rap while including the audience in a game of dice. Deadwyler’s performance was powerful and hard-hitting. Preview Didi Xio’s musical storytelling here.

These are just three of the many incredible artists on display at the Pixels showcase. Raw Natural Born Artists is an international organization connecting local artists to their community while providing them the creative freedom to perfect their craft. Roky Erickson with Black Angels at Terminal West
My two roommates and I went to see Roky Erickson. We were anxious to see what kind of people would be at a show featuring Roky Erickson (obviously The Black Angels headlined). We walked in behind a middle-aged double date. One of the women was wearing gold metallic go-go boots. Of course, The Black Angels are a psychedelic-rock band, so I was expecting oddities like this one. It was a sold out show.
We walked in in the middle of Roky Erickson’s performance, and I cried a little on the inside. I wanted to see him walk on, but I can imagine it: probably simply and without acknowledging there was a crowd of Black Angel fans before him. Roky Erickson got his start in 1966 after co-founding The 13th Floor Elevators. Later in 1974, “Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer)” debuted a more rock and roll side of Roky, as compared to his original psychedelic style. “Two Headed Dog” became a single, which he of course, featured at the show. I assumed he was the reason most of the older folks showed up. He wasn’t alone on stage, though. He was accompanied by three guitarists, a beautiful keyboardist and a drummer, all of which were young and healthy. Roky seemed out of place. He still has long hair, although more gray and he seemed to be looking at the guitarists at either side of him, looking for a nod of approval I was looking forward to seeing him by himself. I wanted to see him on a stool with a guitar singing, “I Love the Living You”. Roky is the epitome of raw, so much so that his acoustic songs become revelatory. He is the only artist that can bring tears to my eyes and yet sing so simply. Nonetheless, he was there, in the flesh, a legend. I was glad to know Roky existed outside of my head. He left as simply as I assume he came out.
Enough of my swooning over Roky Erickson. The crowd multiplied, along with random puffs of smoke overhead (“eh-hem”). There was still a varied age group. To be honest, I had never listened to Black Angels prior to this night. The stage was set with four stand-alone canvases and one large canvas backdrop. Projections splattered the stage with trippy colors and star images. The music played but no Black Angels. I could feel the excitement gathering, and the crowd grew louder, but still, no Black Angels. After two or three minutes of this titillation, they walked on. I was expecting a grand entrance, but I guess you don’t need that when you’re the Black Angels. The crowd went wild, as the cliché goes, and they began. The drummer, a shaggy haired girl that looked like she could stare anyone to death, played a heavy, slow beat. Then the vocalist broke in. This was literally a psychedelic experience – not just The Black Angels but the event as a whole. To my right was a young, sweet couple and to my left a guy that looked like Mick Jagger’s clone. I was still having post-Roky effects, and it was all too much. I wouldn’t have missed this show for the world. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and I shared it with two great people, and that is what makes a concert review-worthy.
Exclusive interview- Joe Michelini from River City Extension
Got to sit down (Indian style) with Joe Michelini (writer/guitarist/vocalist for the band) from River City Extension. Such a nice guy! I love when I am able to talk to people who really have something to say, especially when it is interesting.
River City Extension is an eight-member “lyrical folk” band from Toms River, New Jersey. They recently released their new full-length album, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Your Anger, a record inspired by a darker time in Michelini’s life. Check out my exclusive interview with him below! Hanging outside the Masquerade with The Drowning Men
Everyone should know who The Drowning Men are. Everyone should listen to the song “Rita” (yes, it’s their most popular, but there is a reason– it’s incredible. Repeat repeat repeat…). And everyone should go see them live.
Got the chance to sit down with James and Nato from the band before their show at the Masquerade in Atlanta. Super awesome, incredibly chill guys. No rock star complexes, despite their outrageous talent.
*About the sound…I KNOW that it is hard to hear. Tragic. I swear to you the next thing I buy will be an external mic so we won’t keep having these problems. Bear with me. Underground magazine = tiny budget.
Hanging outside The Masquerade with Kevin Devine
Kevin Devine is amazing. He has been one of my favorite artists ever since I saw him open for The Get Up Kids in Tampa three years ago (along with Mansions—see my interview with them!). I have seen him three times, and it is never enough.
Kevin recently released the album Between the Concrete and Clouds in September of last year. If you haven’t already checked it out (come on…), you definitely should. I don’t know how he does it, but he continues to produce music that is exceptional and addictive. I’m still listening to it, and I snatched it up as soon as it was released.
I was just given the chance to interview Kevin at his show at The Masquerade in Atlanta this weekend. This was pretty much a dream come true for me, as Kevin is an artist that I truly admire and feel honored to have featured in Vinyl.

Backstage with Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless
Alright. So I just interviewed Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless backstage at The Masquerade. Not gonna lie…I had no idea what to expect when I went into this interview. However, besides the fact that we had to do the interview backstage during the opening act (where is the soundproof room?!), it all went down pretty smoothly.
Based on what I have read about Taylor, the last thing I expected was for her to be friendly (nice, sure…but downright friendly?). She welcomed us (my videographer, Katie, and I) backstage and comfortably chatted with us while we got set up. To put it simply, I really enjoyed myself during this interview.
As for the show…dude. Ok. Everyone talks about what Taylor does and wears onstage. A lot of the buzz seems to be about how scandalous she gets. However, people seem to keep forgetting to talk about the actual music. Which, after having seen them live, I now find absolutely astonishing.
The girl can sing. She gets up there and does whatever moves she does and wears whatever she wears to get the audience going, but the real “wow” moment for me was when she opened her mouth. Undeniable voice. Truly, truly talented. For me, he pure talent of the band and her voice completely overshadowed her stage personality (which, in my opinion, is how it should be).
Go ahead and check out our interview below. I’ve transcribed it as well as uploading the video, so bear with me on the dang sound issues.
EM: First, Hit Me Like a Man– Tell me how you came up with the name.
TM: We tend to title things after songs so we don’t have to think of anything else. So Hit Me Like a Man is the title track of the Hit Me Like a Man EP, so it came from the song. The line is “Hit me like a man, love me like a woman.”
EM: So what about My Medicine? Is that personal experience?
TM: I had my first directorial debut on that video. That was a really fun video to shoot. It’s just a bunch of friends, and we just kind of threw it together very last minute. It’s literally kind of…what you see in the video is what it was with some crazy effects added on the top of it. I try not to talk too much about the songs themselves, because I like to let people interpret them and take them how they want to take them. I think I give enough in the songs themselves, but yes- the songs are very personal.
EM: You’ve been writing songs for a very long time. Are you still pulling songs that you wrote way back then?
TM: No!
EM: What are you doing with those songs?
TM: Leaving them and forgetting that they existed.
EM: You’ve been touring since 2010. Do you prefer being on the road?
TM: I love the road…I love playing every night. It’s awesome. But I love the studio. Right now, we’re in the middle of a headline tour, and then we’re jumping on with Manson for a month, and after that we’re going into the studio to start working on the second record. I’m excited for that. I mean, I love touring, but I love being in the studio, too to take a breather and get back inside of my own head and have some time away from the rest of the world.
EM: Are there going to be any songs from this EP on the record?
TM: Possibly. Possibly all of them, possibly none of them- I don’t know yet. We’re still writing the record, so I think you’ll have to wait and see.
EM: Do you have any idea when that would be coming out?
TM: I don’t. I unfortunately do not control the release of things. I just write the songs and record them and hope it gets released…they’re not all written. You’ll have to wait and see. Believe me, I’m more stressed out about it than you are.
EM: What are you listening to lately?
TM: I heard the new Soundgarden single, which is pretty cool. I’m excited that they’re getting back together. I can’t wait for the new record. That’s what I’ve been listening to- old Soundgarden, new Soundgarden…lots of Soundgarden…Die Antwoord- they’re a rap band from South Africa that is pretty awesome, and they make really cool videos. Check them out. I’m kind of boring. I listen to the same stuff over and over again. You know- Beatles, Zeppelin, Who, Pink Floyd, ACDC, Soundgarden..Audioslave, Soundgarden…
EM: Are you channeling anyone when you go onstage?
TM: No. Me- I’m channeling me. It’s more of a performance aspect of myself, but it is myself. I don’t have some crazy alter ego or anything. It’s very much me. That’s it- I’ve played enough characters.
EM: Speaking of that, are you ever going to act again?
TM: I’m so not even thinking about it. It’s certainly not in my near future. To say what the rest of my life will entail I don’t know, but it’s certainly not even on my radar. I like writing. I like writing records, and I like writing songs, touring, and playing in a band. It’s amazing. It’s awesome, so why would I want to do anything else? Unless Rob Zombie calls, and then we’ll talk about that, because that would be awesome.
EM: Besides your acting and writing, do you have any other creative outlets?
TM: I paint. I play guitar. I sculpt. I sew dolls…I sew rag dolls. Um…I play guitar, write…
EM: What do you miss while you’re on tour?
TM: I miss New York a lot. I love New York, and I definitely miss it.
EM: You seem so nice! Why do you think you have such a harsh reputation?
TM: I think I’m nice! Tabloids spin all that stuff around. But thank you! You’re nice.
Hanging out post-show with Mansions
I love Mansions. I first discovered them a few years ago when they (along with Kevin Devine) opened for The Get Up Kids. I was completely blown away. Christopher Browder (who is Mansions at its core) is a genius and a genuinely nice guy. I just got the chance to interview him, along with fellow Mansions musician Robin Dove, at The Masquerade.
This was a big one for me. Chris was the first person that I ever asked for an interview way back when the idea for VINYL was just being formed. I approached him as he was selling his merch after The Get Up Kids went on, and he was extremely kind and enthusiastic, giving me his email and telling me to contact him any time.
Finally, now that VINYL has launched, I got to go back and reunite with Chris for an interview. I cannot say enough positive things about him and Robin. They were completely gracious as we ran around The Masquerade trying to find a semi-quiet spot to interview. These two are the kinds of people that you want to meet again.
I had mentioned that I was going to be near Jacksonville the following night, which happened to be where their next show was. The next day, I had an email from Chris saying that he had put me on the guest list just in case I wanted to stop by. Did I ever want to stop by! Unfortunately, I didn’t make it in time- I don’t want to talk about it. I would have LOVED to see them two nights in a row.
From my brief encounter, these are some seriously great people. I could write a whole separate article about it. But I’m getting a little off topic– this show was amazing and worth going to- twice, if possible.
