ADD THESE…To Your Fall Playlist
It’s Fall! The temperature has dropped, people are starting to wear layers, and everything the food industry can flavor with pumpkin is on its way. All the while, you are probably still jamming to music. Therefore, in light of the new season, here are three songs you should add to your new Fall playlist. Grab some tea and a book, and watch the leaves turn!
1. Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood
Aside from the obvious reasons why this should be on your fall playlist, “Sweater Weather” is perfect for cruising with the windows down (slightly) and taking a stroll around the park. Or, as the name implies, you can cuddle up in your favorite sweater.
2. Silence (ft. Josh Barry) by SG Lewis
It seems that during Fall/Winter people either get in relationships, or they are wondering how in the hell they are still single. No matter which group you happen to fall into, though, “Silence” is a melodic song that is calming for windy and reflective nights. There isn’t much of a beat other than the soft piano playing and a light bass line, but still soothing.
There isn’t really a reason for how it fits the Fall theme, but the song is too great to not have on any playlist you own. It’s no Nirvana, but”Teen Spirit” is very much like hipster R&B with decent bass and the soft raspy voice of SZA.
Young the Giant: “Mind Over Matter (In the Open)”
Young the Giant’s September release of another travel-induced, impromptu music video is here to add to their growing repertoire of roadside, seaside, and hillside (pretty much wherever) jam sessions belonging to their “In The Open” series. Their latest performance comes to us from the edge of Angeles Crest Highway in southern California, and, being next on a stack of shoots that have thus far accumulated the YouTube equivalent of a surgeon’s retirement fund in views, it is definitely something worth paying attention to.
Here’s what we’re getting into: an indie rock band reinventing yet another tune from their second studio album, Mind Over Matter, in the name of…well, making music as the mood strikes. Evident from their past videos, Young the Giant’s penchant for finding interesting backdrops in between playing amphitheaters and digging in with a melodic weave of minor chords and some light percussion rings of being hyper genuine; it shines through from previous “In The Open” releases to this—this time, we get the album’s namesake, and it blows the original away.
The entirety of “Mind Over Matter (In The Open)” is played and filmed within a tunnel, the camera touching on each of the band members as we pan left, right, then back again. The closer we get to each, the more distorted and fuzzy the light at the end of the tunnel becomes, affecting the scene in much the same way the sounds of the five-piece ensemble mingle with the enclosure’s natural acoustics—brilliantly. Young the Giant’s delivery of a synth-free “Mind Over Matter” is definitely an experience to float through, and will have you wondering where your time went by the fifth replay. By the time we begin to backpedal with two of the band’s members through the mouth of the tunnel and out into the sunlight, the resolution we experience is consistent with something minimal, effective, and built of nothing but raw music.
So play it, and then replay it. Go into your bathroom, belt the chorus, and pretend you are in a cave (guilty). Revel in that echo and thrum of acoustic guitar strings, and let the beat wash over you a bit, even if makes you a few minutes late for work.
Here’s the original video:
Flying Lotus ft. Kendrick Lamar: “Never Catch Me”
Flying Lotus, aka Captain Murphy, recently released an audiovisual teaser for his forthcoming album, You’re Dead!, with stunning graphics and audio samples. The already released tracklist promises jazz legend Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Snoop Dogg.
Flying Lotus’s track, “Never Catch Me,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, debuted on Kendrick’s hometown L.A. radio station earlier this month.
The track starts with a simple piano intro before the beat kicks in and Kendrick begins keeping in tune with FlyLo’s quirky, jazzy, schizophrenic beat and rapping about the album’s namesake – the fear of inevitable death and anonymity.
The best parts of the single are after FlyLo speeds everything up – the fast drumbeat, the funky bass lines and the quirky, bubbly synth noises. Its when the piano progression from the intro comes back, the drums slow down and Kendrick tones down his spit-fire verses into a sing-songy voice that taunts the Grim Reaper saying, “you’ll never ever catch me, no.”
The song is madness. Speeding up and slowing down, it’s as if the song repeats itself four times, and yet, in true FlyLo fashion, still has you listening to the whole thing over and over again.
The album and the graphics included in the audiovisual are stunning and strange, making them perfectly suitable for his album, set to drop on October 7. The artist, Shintaro Kago, is a Japenese guro manga artist. FlyLo’s collaboration with Kago gave the album a zombie apocalypse/Halloween in a comic book feel, and its perfect.
Having teased You’re Dead! bit by bit in these last few months, and only two weeks left until the set release date, he is sure to have a few more teasers lined up – maybe the next one will give us more of the sampling of the Snoop Dogg track that we got to hear a snippet of in the audiovisual released.
Hilary Duff is a crazy schizo in her new music video for “Chasing the Sun”
A long time coming (even though I had no idea this was even happening), Lizzie McGuire Hilary Duff has finally released a new single called “Chasing the Sun.” Though it may not be “Come Clean,” and it’s definitely no “Hey Now,” it’s got a little something (not the least of which is Auto-Tune).
Not only do we have a new Duff track, but we also have a new music video!
In it, Hilary is a stressed-out, inappropriately-dressed-for-work (no way that skirt is longer than her fingertips) employee who keeps her pet hamster in her cubicle.
Clearly wanting an escape from her lame job and her less attractive co-workers, she fantasizes so much about going on vacation that she can’t keep her mind on what she is doing. Clumsiness ensues, as she runs into walls, has the office creep rub mayonnaise all over her arms, and splashes water on her colleagues during a business meeting. Oh, and she also almost spikes her hamster in its ball, because she thinks it’s a volleyball. This woman should not own pets.
In the end, she gets fired, but what her manager should really be doing is sending her to a shrink to get evaluated in the likely chance that she has schizophrenia. Seriously – someone get this girl some help.
On another note, Hilary looks gorg (love the hair), and there is a totally gratuitous selfie at the end of the video, so overall, nailed it. This is what psych ward dreams are made of.
“Chasing the Sun” is the lead single off Hilary’s upcoming album to be released this Fall.
Watch: Jenny Lewis “Just One of the Guys” with Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson
We love Jenny Lewis. Like…a whole, whole lot.
We’ve already marked our calendars for the July 29 release of The Voyager, her first solo album since 2008’s Acid Tongue.
Today, she’s released a music video for “Just One of the Guys.”
While we usually have trouble watching anything involving Kristen Stewart or Anne Hathaway trying to look cool (so anything involving them at all)…well, actually, that’s still true here. All about some Brie Larson though. That girl is fantastic. Plus, though poor Tennessee Thomas gets almost no face time in this video, we heart her, too.
Check out the video below, full of couldn’t-be-girlier rainbow suits and couldn’t-be-cuter Jenny Lewis with a beard square. Enjoy!
Watch: Parquet Courts: “Black and White”

Look, it’s Parquet Courts‘ video for “Black and White.” And it’s in black. And white. Groundbreaking.
Watch: Charli XCX: “Boom Clap” from The Fault in Our Stars film and soundtrack
Watch pop darling Charli XCX‘s new music video for “Boom Clap” (her best song in our opinion) from The Fault in Our Stars film and soundtrack. Tear.
