Missy Elliott ft. Pharrell Williams: “WTF (Where They From)”

Posted on November 12, 2015November 12, 2015 by Nikki Smith

In April 2015, we made a list of five artists that need to make a comeback. Missy Elliott comes in at number one. Now our dream has finally come true with the release of her new music video “WTF.” #TBT, the video is straight out of the early 2000’s; not even Missy Elliott has aged. Her costumes are just as edgy and her dance moves just as sassy. A puppet, with an uncanny resemblance to Pharrell Williams, comes in around 1:35, along with some booty poppin’ lady puppets. Time to listen to this track about 100 times and learn every single word. It’s not like we didn’t do the same thing with “Work It.”

WATCH: Charli XCX: “Famous”

Posted on March 26, 2015April 1, 2015 by Nikki Smith

At Vinyl Mag, we love Charli XCX; no doubt our readers love her, too. More obscure but equally loved Eric Wareheim of Tim and Eric directed Charli’s newest music video, “Famous.” Two of our favorite artists in one!

If you’re familiar with Tim and Eric, you’re right to expect a video plagued with obnoxious graphics and a slightly creepy vibe. “Famous” is just that, focusing on our generation’s obsession with technology.

Emojis flying, a fake infomercial, and various old people just doing what they don’t do best…taking selfies. Expect an element of the grotesque and one of hilarity. This is a brainchild Vinyl Mag will be nurturing for a while.

WATCH: Sia: “Elastic Heart” ft. Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler

Posted on January 6, 2015January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Eccentric singer/songwriter Sia released the video for “Elastic Heart” today, and it is…definitely very Sia. Continuing with her self-proclaimed trademark – a blonde wig- the video features “Dance Moms” star Maddie Ziegler taunting and teasing actor Shia LaBeouf.

The video is set in a giant bird cage. LaBeouf is clad in nothing more than dirty nude-colored shorts and his bloody bandages (but we don’t mind that), and Ziegler wears the same leotard and blonde wig she sported in Sia’s “Chandelier” video. The song itself is another hit, with Sia belting notes that make you want to think about your last break-up on top of a beat that sounds like something we could hear backing Rihanna. Sia did write “Diamonds,” didn’t she?

Sia performed “Elastic Heart” on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in July with Ziegler and other dancers colored in clown face paint and colorful attire. According to People, the song was re-released for 1000 Forms of Fear after being on the the soundtrack for Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Overall, the song is bomb. The video is bomb. And Shia LaBeouf is looking mighty ‘beouf.’

Watch: “While We’re Young” Movie Trailer

Posted on December 7, 2014January 7, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Remember when you were a kid and couldn’t wait to grow up…and then you grew up?

Well, writer/director Noah Baumbach has wrapped all those feelings of wanting to be young, carefree, and bill free into his upcoming film, While We’re Young. The movie is a story of an older couple (Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts) who meet a younger couple (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) and become mingled into their adventurous lifestyle that is more than just your average nine-to-five.

The plot of the movie doesn’t seem to be too cheesy, and there’s even an old Beastie Boy in the mix. Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz portrays the no-nonsense, realist friend of Watts and Stiller, who is extremely puzzled at their recent and current behavior. Funny that one of the The Beastie Boys would be telling someone to not have fun.

While We’re Young airs in theaters on Mar. 27, 2015. Check out the trailer below.

WYATT: ‘Here Comes Everybody’ EP

Posted on December 4, 2014January 7, 2015 by Nikki Smith

Representing New York City, WYATT releases her newest EP Here Comes Everybody. Better known as singer/songwriter Maddy Wyatt, her style is generally described as indie folk pop, but her EP diverges into psychedelic effects and French lyrics, influenced by WYATTS’s own family line.

“Palacyum” opens the EP with a simple beat and a 90’s rock vibe. A slight echo effect and smooth lyrics debut WYATT’s flawless vocal range.

“L’ete,” which translates into “the summer,” follows with WYATT’s French incorporation. Her soft vocals and ethereal “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” embody the attitude and sensuality of France.

“Up & Up” lifts us from a hazy summer in France with a psychedelic rock beat and groovy sound effects, while “4 & 20” mellows things out with airy harmonization and more of WYATT’s French lyrics.

Closing the five track EP, “Walking Down 6th Ave in the Sun” continues with the softer sound and goes back to WYATT’s signature folk sound and Stevie Nicks-like lyrics, “We are the moon howlers.” According to WYATT’s website, the song came in a flood as she was walking through her Brooklyn neighborhood. The track ends the EP on an uplifting note.
Throughout the EP, I could not help but be entranced by WYATT’s liquid voice, which jumps from low to high in a switch. Even watching live performances, she sings as if she were reading a fairy tale.

WYATT takes us through snippets of her history and feelings with sounds that come from Wyatt’s background in cool Colorado, the fluidity of the French language and New York’s energy. All of this combined to make up a simple, but playful little EP.

Watch: Charli XCX “Breaking Up”

Posted on December 2, 2014January 7, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Stereotypically, girls cry for days around a carton of Ben & Jerry’s and a bunch of cats after breaking up with their significant others, but of course with Charli XCX, typical is never on the agenda.

The “London Queen” has released her latest video exclusively through BuzzFeed. The video is titled “Breaking Up,” but for Charli that isn’t a sad moment. Free of the boredom that she felt with her ex-beau, the song and video is focused around a girl who says that “everything was wrong with [her boyfriend]” and that “breaking up was an easy thing to do.” Ouch. However, in Charli XCX fashion, she doesn’t leave you with a sting without making it better with kisses. The video – outside of its primary message – is a fun, energetic piece resembling something I’ve seen in “Saved By the Bell,” and trust me that’s a good thing.

With bright and funky colors and a rockout session in a bowling alley, Charli’s new video is  everything a late ’80s/early ’90s kid could dream of! Check it out below and don’t forget! Charli XCX’s Sucker is out in stores Dec. 15!

Watch: Pharrell and Cara Delevingne: “CC the World”

Posted on December 1, 2014January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Seven minutes and 46 seconds. That’s how long will take you to go through reincarnation and transform into a more whimsical, fashionable, and cultured individual. At least that’s the impression that I received after watching the “Reincarnation” short film by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.

The short film, which is to accompany Chanel’s annual Métiers d’Art show, stars singer Pharrell Williams and the lovely Cara Delevingne! Based off of Coco Chanel’s actual holiday vacation to Austria where she was inspired by a hotel elevator operator’s uniform to design the iconic Chanel jacket, the video is a half-Cinderella/half-Night at the Museum plot including a duet by Pharrell and Cara D titled “CC the World.”  Yes, I said Cara D. She sings in this film!

Pharrell acts as the hotel elevator operator and Cara D plays a maid or waitress, and both transform into the painting of the wall of who I assume to be royalty of Austria, including Austrian Empress Elisabeth (who went by “SiSi”). Coupling some Victorian dance moves and the sheer beauty of Pharrell and Cara together makes the video addicting for viewers. Other cast members in the film include Geraldine Chaplin – the daughter of Charlie Chaplin – as Chanel, and Lady Amanda Harlech.

Check out the video below for yourself. Because Cara. Like, what can she NOT do?

Watch: Better Call Saul trailer!

Posted on December 1, 2014January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

FINALLY A TRAILER WORTH SCREAMING FOR!

In preparation for AMC’s newest show and Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, there have been numerous teasers without much plot information.

Now, though, a new trailer has been released, and we have some action! The latest trailer for the BB spin-off stars Jonathan Banks reliving his old role of Mike Ehrmantraut (fave) working at his parking toll and ending up with a little run-in with Saul (Bob Odenkirk).  Jonathan Banks plays angry really well, so this trailer is definitely something exciting to see.

Better Call Saul premieres Sunday, Feb. 8 at 10 p.m. on AMC.

Watch: ‘The Age of Adaline’ Trailer

Posted on November 20, 2014January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

It’s beginning to look like #TrailerThursday.

In addition to the release of the Pitch Perfect 2 trailer, a trailer for the upcoming movie The Age of Adaline – starring Gossip Girl Blake Lively – was released earlier this morning, and I’m adding this movie to my “Must-See” list of 2015.

Lively plays a stunning woman (not that she can help it) by the name of Adaline who, after crashing into a lake, magically no longer has the ability to age. She has a daughter who grows older than her (played by Ellen Burstyn) and an aging first love whom she has never forgotten (played by Harrison-freaking-Ford).

From the trailer, it seems that Lively spends the majority of her present life living in the past, watching everyone from her former life and identity move on. In the trailer, she later meets a young beau (played by GoT‘s Daario Naharis #2) who I assume she falls in love with, though there are no real hints to where their relationship goes.

Check out the trailer for yourself below. The Age of Adaline opens in theaters April 24, 2015.
