The Asymptomatics Celebrate New Single ‘Two Possibilities’ With A Live Performance at Flicker Theatre and Bar

Posted on November 15, 2023November 16, 2023 by Analiese Herrin

Athens has been home to critically acclaimed bands throughout the decades, marking the Classic City as not only home to the University of Georgia and its students but also a booming hub for artists and musicians alike. One such band is the funky, weird but strangely groovy The Asymptomatics.

The Asymptomatics, or “the Asymps” as they are often called, is a band of nine members who have made “chaotic” the name of the game. Since its formation in 2019, the band has garnered a name for itself within the music community of Athens. After the release of three singles, they have now added one more to their list of original music. To celebrate the release of their brand new single, “Two Possibilities”, the Asymptomatics recruited a list of prominent local Athens bands to play at Flicker Theatre and Bar for a night of unforgiving energy and sound.

Walking into Flicker is always a surreal experience, particularly on the evening of a gig. From the outside, bypassers can hear the beat of the featured band while they smoke a cigarette and drink a beer. Walking through the red curtains that lead to the venue portion of the establishment, stationed in the room next to the bar, I could see a sea of people bobbing their heads to the band, Neat Freak, which was followed by Late Notice and finally, Bog Bod. The celebrated feature of the night, The Asymps, performed last. Between bands, members handed out flyers with the single’s cover art designed by Hollis Midriff and they discussed their excitement to play their cleanest-sounding single live for the first time.

The band’s set began as most of its sets do, with the lead singer Max Mahieu relentlessly jumping around the stage with the band, maintaining an aura of chaos that has defined the group’s career, particularly in the past year.

The single itself possesses an eccentric guitar-solo build-up in the outro. Though their MO is full-fledged passion, this song was a pleasant departure as it boasted a more meaningful and slower vibe. “Two Possibilities” explores that little gray area in life by rejecting the idea of black-and-white decisions and outcomes. A simple song to describe how intensely unsimple this life can be, especially when young, as the band members are.

“A lot of times it seems like there’s two possibilities but, you know, in reality, things are a lot deeper than that,” says Mahieu. “It’s not just decisions you make, it’s the decisions of the people around you and the ones you love that affect your life and affect their life.” Mahieu’s family is the inspiration behind the song, which was written by Mahieu and his mom, who is a musician herself.

It’s both happy and sad which is reflected by the musicians as they played with electricity and passion, making the audience feel the underlying irony of “Two Possibilities”. Mastered by Jason NeSmith at Chase Park Transduction, “Two Possibilities” incorporates a classic guitar solo from the lead guitar that amplifies the emotional aspect of the song.

“We wanted to have this big rock section at the end that instrumentally captures the emotion and the vibes of the song that the lyrics start at the beginning,” said Mahieu.

From there, the band immediately transitioned to play their classic, most-noteworthy hit “GTFO! (Gerald the Friendly Orangutan)” which was a lighthearted and silly conclusion to a great show.

Though the chaotic transformation of the Asymptomatics onstage is something that some would deem messy and unorganized, those with an ear for passion would comprehend that this gives the band its personality, hence its rising claim to fame within Athens. A funk outfit of shameless chaos and a force to behold.

“Two Possibilities” is out now on all platforms, with the Asymptomatic’s first full album slated for spring.

The Tallest Man On Earth shares first single “Sagres” off new album + announces tour dates

In recent months, the landscape of mainstream music has begun shifting towards a more organic sound that trades acoustic guitars and rougher vocals for synths and vocals that have been compressed to hell.

Although The Tallest Man On Earth, real name Kristian Matsson, is neither mainstream nor pop, this Swedish artist has been releasing consistently good folk records for nearly 10 years.

Today, his fourth LP Dark Bird is Home – out May 12 via Dead Oceans — was formally announced and accompanied by a new single “Sagres.” The album was written on his travels around the world to promote 2012’s There’s No Leaving Now and the influence touring has had on his music is undeniable.

Named after the seaside village in Portugal, “Sagres” is quite possibly the most positive Matsson has sounded. He’s nixed the totally acoustic styling of his previous material in favor of a lusher band sound that incorporates percussion and more orchestral elements to create a more visceral environment for the listener.

There is a duality, however, as his older material focused heavily on his vocals and lyricism and this first preview of new material shifts the focus to new instrumentation perhaps too much. His golden vocals are overtaken and often drowned out throughout the song to a point where the lyrics are indeterminable for half the song.

The inability to fully hear his voice and usually powerful lyrics to accompany it is what demotes a potentially fantastic track to a dull unmemorable one that will likely be playing in a hotel elevator or coffee shop.

Scarlett Johansson forms girl group, releases first single

Posted on February 21, 2015March 13, 2015 by Morgan Greenfield

Stepping off the big screen and into your speakers, Scarlet Johansson teams up with Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, Julie Haitigan, and well beloved Este Haim to form the new pop super girl group The Singles. Today, these lovely ladies released their new electric pop song “Candy.”

With their Madonna-esque vibes, The Singles bring the bounce back into pop with their indie, almost MGMT-goes-girl sounding effects. The recipe was simple. Add movie star, great musicians, and TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek to form one sweet song for your hearing pleasure. Scarlett told Rolling Stones earlier:

“I would say it’s super-pop… the idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls… I love Grimes. And I love Bangles. And I love the Go-Go’s. I wanted it to be like those bands. Ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”

The joke, I am assuming, is the song itself. Although this was a gallant try, ScarJo should maybe stick to movies. As their first song, this was nothing truly original, and the vocals were slightly off – sorry, Scarlett. The music did have a catchy tempo accompanied by catchy lyrics.

Overall, however, the competition could eat this for breakfast.

Kirk Knight: “Brokeland”

Posted on February 10, 2015March 13, 2015 by Morgan Greenfield

kirkknightbrokeland

Infamous rap crew Pro-Era’s very own Kirk Knight hits us with a fist-full of Brooklyn in his new single, “Brokeland.”

Filled with head-bobbing beats, this new crew has always been known for dropping tapes featuring self-produced music, and Kirk Knight is no exception. With rebellious tones, Knight sticks to hip hop norms by rapping about – you guessed it – guns and drugs. Life on the streets of Brooklyn is quite the ghetto adventure.

The music behind the track brings listeners back to the 90’s with its up-tempo bounce. The song starts with simple keyboard-separated chords that slowly but surely turn into a complex, Biggie-sounding beat.Throughout the intro, the rappers hype fans up with sounds of gunshots accompanied by shoutouts to their crew.

Once Kirk Knight starts to spit his game, you feel as though you want to get up and dance even though his lyrics are anything but light. He raps, “To try and flash clothes and fair guns / Because where I’m from for amusement shoot the fair one.” Heavy.

Kendrick Lamar: “The Blacker the Berry”

Posted on February 10, 2015March 13, 2015 by Morgan Greenfield

kendricklamar

After an interesting night at the Grammy’s, rap icon Kendrick Lamar shocked fans with the release of his new single, “The Blacker the Berry.”

With help from producer Boi-1da, Kendrick Lamar uses his lyrical gifts to shine light once again upon social issues pertaining to our generation’s form of evolved racism. Not to mention Lamar’s genius timing, as February is also Black History Month.

The music behind the lyrics presents a of haunting tone. Full of dubs and loops, the tune will get stuck in your head and bring a little badassery to your day.

The lyrics, on the other hand, are evocative of the hate and rage that any ostracized person feels. He raps, “You hate me don’t you / I know you hate me just as much as you hate yourself / jealous of my wisdom and cards I dealt / Watchin me as I pull up, fill up my tank, then peel out”  – perfect for the theme he presents.

As a whole, the song is a bit of off tempo. The lyrics really do not match up with music behind it, and the lyrics are very oddly placed. Regardless of the failure to follow formula, the song is genius and an oddity that will continue to gain Lamar the respect he rightly deserves.

Emile Haynie: “Wait For Life”

Posted on January 19, 2015March 13, 2015 by Andrew Plaskowsky

Emile Haynie certainly isn’t the first name someone would mention when asked about a hip-hop producer, but a look at his credentials begs the question: why don’t I know who this is?

In his decade-plus career, he’s teamed up with the likes of Kid Cudi, Eminem, Kanye West, Lana Del Rey, and Bruno Mars, just to name a few.

Today, the lush first track of his forthcoming debut album, We Fall – out on February 24 through Interscope – was released, the pleading “Wait For Life” featuring Lana Del Rey.

Peaceful steel guitar chords and strings effortlessly create the Paradise-like sonic atmosphere for the duration of the song, as they’re backed by Del Rey’s sultry siren-like harmonies and musings about being lonely (I wait for life to end / But it never comes around), a perfect intersection between the trip-hop of 2012’s “Born To Die” and 2014’s subdued neo-jazz effort “Ultraviolence.”

The album is slated to contain features by other artists Brian Wilson and Lykke Li. If “Wait For Life” is any indication of what we should expect from the rest of the record, the wait for next month will be equally as long.

Watch: Night Terrors of 1927: “When You Were Mine”

Posted on December 2, 2014January 7, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Duo Night Terrors of 1927 have teamed up with the beloved Tegan and Sara for their new break-up ballad, “When You Were Mine.”

The new song is the lead single off of Night Terrors of 1927’s upcoming debut LP, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, which is due to be released Jan. 20 via Atlantic. The video for the song is a like a choreographed number, presenting a girl dancing around her apartment in a contemporary style during the emotional aftermath of a break-up. Meanwhile, Tegan and Sara and Night Terrors are shot in scenes of the garage and outside synth-singing the tune.

The video captures the heartache beautifully and in a realistic manner and all, but the dancers should really consider auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance? Check out the video below, and you’ll see why!

Watch: Charli XCX “Breaking Up”

Posted on December 2, 2014January 7, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Stereotypically, girls cry for days around a carton of Ben & Jerry’s and a bunch of cats after breaking up with their significant others, but of course with Charli XCX, typical is never on the agenda.

The “London Queen” has released her latest video exclusively through BuzzFeed. The video is titled “Breaking Up,” but for Charli that isn’t a sad moment. Free of the boredom that she felt with her ex-beau, the song and video is focused around a girl who says that “everything was wrong with [her boyfriend]” and that “breaking up was an easy thing to do.” Ouch. However, in Charli XCX fashion, she doesn’t leave you with a sting without making it better with kisses. The video – outside of its primary message – is a fun, energetic piece resembling something I’ve seen in “Saved By the Bell,” and trust me that’s a good thing.

With bright and funky colors and a rockout session in a bowling alley, Charli’s new video is  everything a late ’80s/early ’90s kid could dream of! Check it out below and don’t forget! Charli XCX’s Sucker is out in stores Dec. 15!

Watch: Leighton Meester and Dana Williams cover “You & Your Sister”

Posted on November 20, 2014January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Are these just minor coincidences, or can nearly every former cast member from the CW’s Gossip Girl sing like a heavenly angel?

You’ve got Taylor Momsen in The Pretty Reckless, Penn Badgley and MOTHXR, and here’s Leighton Meester doubling up with soulstress Dana Williams in a synchronized and beautiful cover of Chris Bell’s “You & Your Sister.” Harmony at its best, Meester and Williams bring together their perfectly complementary voices to sing the song in a husky, sway-inducing ballad as if the two were actual sisters.

Between the runs and raspy high notes, the song is perfect for cruising down a country road or dancing hand in hand in a field of grass.

Meester, who dropped her album Heartstrings a few weeks ago, shows that she has a place in the music biz. Check out for yourself below!
