Video Premiere: Maitland – “Luna”

Posted on October 26, 2017October 27, 2017 by Jacklyn Citero

Philadelphia indie folk rock group Maitland follows up the June released of their debut full length Glimpse with the ethereal music video for track “Luna.”

“Although the song plays like a love song, ‘Luna’ has a bit of a deeper message, touching on the frailty of our environment and the world’s infatuation with endless consumption,” says the band of the video.  “There are sort of three ‘mindsets’ that we were trying to convey through the video; one: vulnerability, suffocation, and the need to escape something, two: the dreamlike satisfaction of taking advantage of the world we live in, three: the search for something greater than the physical experience of life.”

Without the haunting yet beautiful imagery of video, the track itself expresses its message through artfully crafted poetic lyricism.

“Lyrically, the chorus is a mantra of sorts, chanting about a finite spring that everyone needs to drink from.,” says the band of the track.  “Unless we only take what we need (and no more), we’ll run dry. As a few people search for a fleeting fulfillment, taking more than their share, others are left with the final drops. But there’s room for rebuilding, and it takes a village.  These words also point at a holy spring. The source from which all life comes into being. This spring will never run dry and will always offer what is required in order to rebuild the individual, the community, and the world.”

Check out the premiere of “Luna” below.

For those in the Philly area on November 9, head over to Johnny Brenda‘s to catch the band live with Square Peg Round Hole and Abi Reimold.

Amsterdam Station: “Stories from the Subtext”

Posted on December 26, 2015 by Nikki Smith

It’s been about a year since the boys of Amsterdam Station released their seven song EP, Stories from the Subtext. The EP came to initiate the band’s plan for a full-length album in the coming new year. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the band consists of Greg Jarvis, Andy Potash, Schafer Gray, and Chris Connelly.

With an alternative rock style, Amsterdam Station opens their EP with “Warden.” “Warden” exhibits a catchy, sonorous bass melody, balanced with a fluid vocals and stark guitar riffs, “City of the Dead” follows with a classic violin sound and a haunting chorus. Slower songs like, “White Dove” and “Love is a Martyr,” exemplify the band’s flexibility. While they produce heavy hitting rock ballads, AS also knows how to serenade their listeners. Furthermore, Stories from the Subtext offers cohesiveness among the tracks. The EP begins with a post-apocalyptic feel and ends on an optimistic note with “Sons and Daughters of the Revolution.”

Although the band is still developing, and will inevitably make a few changes in the future, they’ve started off on the right foot. Their sound comes together with meaningful lyrics. AS essentially encourages their listeners to hear the story behind the sound.

Don’t be fooled by these guys’ rock style, they have a soft side. In light of the holiday season, Amsterdam Station has graced us with their harmonic rendition of “Happy Xmas (War is Over).

Superbody: “Wings 4 Two” Music Video

Posted on October 22, 2015October 22, 2015 by Nikki Smith

After their recent release of Hades Land, Chattanooga-based Robert McCurry and Caleb Dills have debuted their newest music video for “Wings 4 Two.” With an 80’s pop sound and deep vocals from McCurry, the video implicates a “home video” style. French subtitles guide the video as McCurry and Dills play in front of a sparse audience.  The glowing light and stark contrast gives the video a David Lynchian feel. Among the audience is a mutated man, like something out of Eraserhead. The man follows Dills home, who eventually emerges from the nightmarish scene only to exhibit more disorientation.

The video coincides with Superbody’s heavy sound. With sonorous guitar rhythms combined with Dill’s dreamy synthesizer effects and McCurry’s baritone vocals, the video embodies the ethereal style of the track. The video is directed by the boys of Superbody and Christopher Artell.

Drake Dances In Hotline Bling

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Maria Lewczyk

No one expected “Hotline Bling” to get so popular, and no one expected it to become the next music phenomenon.  Now you can’t go anywhere without hearing the iconic beats along with someone saying “you used to call me on my cellphone”.  On Oct. 19, 2015 Drake released the highly anticipated music video for “Hotline Bling”, which was the first music video since If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late‘s “Energy”.  Created by Director X with inspiration from American lights artist James Turrell, the video is clean and simple.  The use of different colored lights and sharp shapes created an aesthetically pleasing world for Drake to freestyle some dances moves in.  Heads up: the dancing is goofy and absolutely perfect.

Superbody: Hades Land

Posted on September 22, 2015 by Nikki Smith

Superbody was born in the mountains of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the brainchild of Robert McCurry and Caleb Dills. The duo has only just begun; after 5 months, the band has produced their first full length album, Hades Land.

Vocalist, McCurry, brings the deep, pop vocals of the 80’s, while Dills softens the sonorous voice with dreamy indie sounds. The album opens with “Call Me That.”  McCurry’s baritone voice flows over a harmonizing layer of twinkling melodies. The video was directed by Athens’ own, Vann Johnson. The video really embodies the band’s ethereal persona, as McCurry wakes up in a world of surrealism, surrounded by montages of plastic toy animals and magazine clippings. McCurry walks through this world with a feminine poise, which lightens the low tone of his voice and adds a bit of humor to the colorful dream.

“Hands Up” employs a more industrial, noise style with a haunting melody, but the chorus comes through with airy “ooh’s” and an uplifting riff. “Wings 4 Two” follows with sweeter sounds and lyrics. This track definitely exhibits an 80’s pop sound, with samples from a female voice, “I don’t really care where we go, baby. It could be Paris, London or Little Rock for all I care…” The synth utilization is similar to that of Desire and Chromatics. Superbody exhibits the same ambiance, but continues to include a subtle and deep, indie sound that makes it all their own.

“5678” takes on a more upbeat sound with a funky riff and more synthesizer beats. Finally, “Fools Gold” completes the debut album with a rough, rock sound combined with a dreamy synthesizer melody.

Superbody has been born, and they’re definitely a band that we’re definitely interested in watching grow. It’s rare that a band comes along and creates something new. No doubt Superbody will continue to change their sound as they evolve, but we hope they remain constant in their originality and creativity. Imagine their live shows! Check them out at the Flicker Theater on October 7th and/or the 40 Watt on November 6th.

WATCH: Charli XCX: “Famous”

Posted on March 26, 2015April 1, 2015 by Nikki Smith

At Vinyl Mag, we love Charli XCX; no doubt our readers love her, too. More obscure but equally loved Eric Wareheim of Tim and Eric directed Charli’s newest music video, “Famous.” Two of our favorite artists in one!

If you’re familiar with Tim and Eric, you’re right to expect a video plagued with obnoxious graphics and a slightly creepy vibe. “Famous” is just that, focusing on our generation’s obsession with technology.

Emojis flying, a fake infomercial, and various old people just doing what they don’t do best…taking selfies. Expect an element of the grotesque and one of hilarity. This is a brainchild Vinyl Mag will be nurturing for a while.

WATCH: Sia: “Elastic Heart” ft. Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler

Posted on January 6, 2015January 8, 2015 by DeShonna Johnson

Eccentric singer/songwriter Sia released the video for “Elastic Heart” today, and it is…definitely very Sia. Continuing with her self-proclaimed trademark – a blonde wig- the video features “Dance Moms” star Maddie Ziegler taunting and teasing actor Shia LaBeouf.

The video is set in a giant bird cage. LaBeouf is clad in nothing more than dirty nude-colored shorts and his bloody bandages (but we don’t mind that), and Ziegler wears the same leotard and blonde wig she sported in Sia’s “Chandelier” video. The song itself is another hit, with Sia belting notes that make you want to think about your last break-up on top of a beat that sounds like something we could hear backing Rihanna. Sia did write “Diamonds,” didn’t she?

Sia performed “Elastic Heart” on Jimmy Kimmel Live back in July with Ziegler and other dancers colored in clown face paint and colorful attire. According to People, the song was re-released for 1000 Forms of Fear after being on the the soundtrack for Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Overall, the song is bomb. The video is bomb. And Shia LaBeouf is looking mighty ‘beouf.’
